Liberty Patriots: 2020 High School Football Preview
http://franchisesportsmedia.com
Nobody in the state has suffered and toiled quite like the Liberty High School Patriot football team. In the last decade, the Patriots have made it to two state title games and every regional championship game in their respective area.
Coach Rich Maracco in his 13 years as the head coach for Liberty, had turned them into one of the most exceptional programs in the nation. As close Liberty has been to cementing themselves in the history books with a championship, one team has been in the way. In that time, the only thing that obstructed the Patriots from their much-deserved state title has been the Gael’s of Bishop Gorman.
It just got real, though.
The 2019 Liberty Patriots got the monkey off their backs. They took the state title home after an overtime, come from behind thrilling win over Bishop Gorman on their home field in the Southern Region Championship game last season. After the 31-24 win against the Gaels, The patriots went on to defeat Northern powerhouse Demonte Ranch and surprise contender Centennial in the state championship game.
The 50-7 win over the Bulldogs brought Liberty’s first state title, becoming the first public school in a decade to win it all.
Having proven that Liberty is indeed a program of champions, many wonder what this coming season will bring for the Patriots.
Shortly after the Patriots won their first football championship, rumors started to swirl that some of their key players would be transferring to national power St. John Bosco in Bellflower, California. Those rumors proved to be false. They also revealed the type of talent Liberty has returning in 2020.
Team captain and star running back Zyrus Faisau – who will be attending San Diego St. next fall, will be returning to be the focal point of the Patriot offense. He is also a linebacker and is a playmaker on both sides of the ball.
Liberty also has one of the nation’s top tight ends, the University of Oregon commitment Mo Matavao. Standing at 6’8 and weighing in at around 250 pounds, Matavao is a huge target. He can do it all on the field and in the classroom. He has enough speed to stretch the defense and ample power at the point of attack when blocking.
Although they have lost some solid players due to graduation, many team leaders return for an encore senior season after helping the team get the chip in their junior year. Players like QB Daniel Britt threw for over 2141 yards, WR Germie Bernard, who caught 54 balls for 954 yards, and LB Zephania Maea, who recorded 95 tackles last season.
In this writer’s opinion, the only thing that will change for Liberty going into next season is who their running back will be when Faisau goes out of the game to get a breather. No matter who it is, they will have a big, physical, and battle-tested offensive line to run behind. Defensively Liberty has always maintained a solid group over the years, and many of their front seven players are coming back this season.
A Fluke? Don’t get it twisted. The Patriots will return next season with a team just as good if not better than the 2019 Championship team.
The truth is, nobody wonders what the Liberty Patriots will do next season when the whistles start blowing, and pads start popping. They earned their championship the hard way. It was forged with over a decade of heartbreak, blowouts, and tough losses in meaningful games on local T.V. They achieved it with blood, sweat, and tears for all of the Valley to see. The Patriots realize that all they have to do is stay true to themselves and defend their title.
They plan to do just that.
