With a full slate of action across the valley, including a game that had high school football national title implications, the eyes of the high school football world were on 702HSFB! FSM recaps the action.

Las Vegas High School Football is back!

This week’s Las Vegas high school football lineup featured some of the best games anywhere in the country. From intense rivalries to clashes between nationally ranked powerhouses, this week’s lineup was must-see TV for football fans.

Despite the weather, this week’s action kicked off at 4 pm when St. Louis (Hawai’i) took on #3 Desert Pines at Liberty High School. This was the second game of The Island Classic Football Games. The Jaguars lost a tough one 35-30 to St. Louis, who remained in Vegas all week after taking on Liberty last Saturday. St. Louis wide receiver Titan Lacaden had three first-half touchdowns and was an issue for the Jaguars all game. Lacaden had 11 catches for 186 yards and four touchdowns.

The game that followed St. Louis and DP was Campbell High School (Hawai’i) taking on #2 Liberty in the final game of The Island Classic Football Games. Liberty again found a way to win a tough game, coming away with the 20-14 victory. Liberty running back Isaiah Lauofo had touchdown runs of 15 and 70 yards for the Patriots.

Meanwhile, Silverado and Foothill squared off at Foothill High School. The Skyhawks were looking to extend their 26-game winning streak, while the Falcons were looking to stay hot and show why they are a dangerous team. The Falcons did indeed snap the Silverhawks 26-game winning streak, beating Silverado 24-16.

Coronado and Durango faced off in a game that looked entertaining on paper. The Trailblazers were trying to win their second straight under new head coach Robert Cutts, while Coronado was looking for their first win of the year. Coronado got their first win, defeating Durango 28-6.

The longest rivalry in Nevada High School took place Friday night when Rancho traveled to Las Vegas High School in the latest edition of The Battle of the Bone. The Wildcats keep the bone again after the 44-0 win over the Rams.

FSM Prep Rally Game of the Week: Miami Central vs. Bishop Gorman

Centennial took on Palo Verde in Week 2 #702HSFB action

This week’s FSM Prep Rally Game of the Week saw the Miami Central Rockets travel across the country to face off against the #1-ranked Bishop Groman Gaels. Coming into this matchup, the Rockets were ranked #5 in the country, while the Gaels were ranked #2.

Beyond the excitement surrounding this game, it carried some big-time implications for the high school football national title race. Both Miami Central and Bishop Gorman have established themselves as perennial contenders, and a win in this matchup would catapult either team into the national title conversation. Gorman, in particular, finds itself amid a grueling schedule with Corona Centennial heading to Vegas next week to take on the Gaels.

But first things first, the Gaels had to take care of Miami Central.

The game was everything high school football fans expected and more. Before the game (actually all week), the head coach for Miami Central was motivating his team by talking trash. Some of the “motivational talk” was on camera and released on social media, which provided more motivation for the Gaels. Then, before kickoff, after an hour-and-a-half rain delay, one of the Rockets coaches started talking trash on the Gorman sideline, which caused some of the Gorman staff to chirp back. The officials and other coaches on both sides got in between.

The scene was set, and it was go time.

 

The first half was filled with big plays from both teams. From long runs to long bombs to a kickoff return for a TD to controlling the clock, it had it all, and it seemed like after every Bishop Gorman touchdown, Miami Central answered back. The Gaels took a 21–14 lead into halftime. In the second half, Miami Central struck first, marching down the field mainly by running the ball and scoring a touchdown. But Bishop Corman answered back, scoring a touchdown in only four plays.

The game remained a seesaw affair for the entire fourth quarter. After Miami Central surprisingly attempted (and missed) a 52-yard field goal, leading 35-33 and with 1:57 left in the game. Bishop Gorman went on a 5-play, 80-yard drive that cumulated with an Elija Lofton rushing touchdown from 1 yard out and gave the Gaels a 39-33 lead. Miami Central got the ball back, and four plays later, on fourth down, through interception to Devon Rice to seal the game and keep Bishop Gorman’s national championship hopes alive.

The road does not get any easier for Bishop Gorman. They take on another perennial power, Corona Centennial, next Friday, with kickoff scheduled for 7 pm at Fertitta Football Field.

The final score from Palo Verde High School was Centennial defeating the Panther 26-20.
