Last Week Bishop Gorman and Faith Lutheran enjoyed massive blowout victories over Slam academy and Moapa Valley high school. Seeming up games for the only two 5A schools in the Southern Nevada Valley actively participated in the three-game spring season that was allowed day Governor Sisolak over one month ago.

Friday night, the two met for the first time in four years, with many similarities. Both are sporting new head coaches, bringing in new systems on both sides of the ball. Last night’s game’s importance cannot be overstated, being the Gaels senior night for Bishop Gorman. A statement that less than two months ago seemed unlikely an event to happen.

The Gaels celebrated 31 seniors that, against all odds, got to walk out unto their home field one last time.

After that, it was all business. Both teams had a face-off moment when entering the field that officials broke up, setting the game’s tone to be played. Gorman showed their intensity and focused by ending the Crusader’s first drive with an interception by Justin Reed 1:30 seconds into the game. Freshman QB Micah Alejado came out and led Gaels on a six-play drive that ended with a 32-yard strike to Zach Branch to take the lead with just under nine minutes left in the first. Faith Lutheran tried to respond with a drive of their own, but a sack by Maa Gaoteote stalled the Crusader’s drive at midfield.

After back-to-back stalled drives by both teams, Gael Running back Cam Barfield went 68 yards for a score that put Faith Lutheran down 14-0. The following drive Gaels Micah Alejado connected with Johnathan Brady for an eight-yard touchdown ending the first quarter with Gorman up 21-0.

To make matters worse, the Crusaders had their punt blocked to start the second quarter.  On the next play, Cam Barfield went on a 30-yard run that demoralized the Crusader’s defense: breaking tackle after tackle until he was downed at the seven-yard line. Zach Branch finished the drive with a similar run. After a snap infraction penalty, Gorman backed up to the 12. Next play Alejado connected with Branch again for the duo’s second touchdown of the game. The freshman quarterback finished the night with an impressive 228 yards and four touchdowns.

It was all Gorman for the rest of the game, Faith Lutheran looked flustered and unable to regain their collective cool to overcome the flood of blue and orange. Quarterback Grant Wood was under constant pressure having to throw passes before his man was ready; the pressure led to two interceptions, five sacks, and Wood often running away from defenders. Faith Lutheran running back Marcos Cornales found little to no running room against the Gorman against linebacker Maa Gaoteote, defensive end Cyruss Moss, and the rest of the Gaels defense.

The 43-0 final score shows that Gorman is still a top 5A team that was primed and ready to make another run at the state title. While it showed Faith Lutheran had some ways to go before being ready to compete with the top 5A teams when the fall season comes around.

Bishop Gorman won’t play again until April 9th, when they face off against Moapa Valley at Fertitta Field. As for Faith Lutheran, they will be playing SLAM Academy at home, also on April 9th.
