The Canyon Springs Pioneers were robbed last season after the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) deemed one of the Pioneers’ players ineligible for a season after their stunning upset of Northwest powerhouse Arbor View. The decision forced the Canyon Springs football program to forfeit all games for the 2019 season, including the four wins that featured great road upsets of Legacy and Arbor View. The decision was unpopular throughout the Valley and faced some scrutiny, but the decision was final.

Canyon Springs accepted it and went into the offseason visibly upset by the outcome.

However, with the coming year, a very young and scrappy Canyon Springs football team, who lost two tight games to Foothill and Las Vegas High (both playoff teams), is coming back together with a purpose. They want to erase the taste of the controversial ending they faced last year. Of the North Fifth Trio of teams (Legacy, Canyon, and Mojave), the Pioneers football program has stood atop the Northeast division for a decade. They’ve won the division six out of ten years and placed second twice.

Coach Gus McNair and company have kept Canyon Springs in the driver seat of the Northeastern division from 2016 to 2018, winning the Northeastern division, with 2019 being the only year in his four-year tenure that the program has not taken the division or had a winning record. 2019 was a tough rebuilding year for the team because they were also among the youngest teams in the Valley.

Coming into the new season, the Pioneers will be much more experienced at key positions like running back, quarterback, defensive back, and offensive line.

That makes them possibly the most dangerous team in the Northwest besides Desert Pines, with returning players like star senior running back Martin Blake, who led the team in rushing (463), all-purpose yards (740), and scoring, with nine touchdowns. Returning senior receiver Javion Davidson led in receiving yards with 454 and five touchdowns. Junior quarterback Nyic’quavayion Willis started three games last year as a sophomore at Canyon Springs. The Pioneers already had a big three for their offense.

Defensively, Canyon Springs played very well at the end of last season, keeping both Legacy and Arbor View under 20 points. This season the Pioneers need a player to rise above the rest and control the defense. Canyon Springs needs a game-breaker on the defensive side of the ball. Based on their youth, a player could reveal himself throughout the season.

One thing’s for sure; the offense will hold up its end of the deal by moving the ball and scoring points.

When the season begins in the spring, Canyon will have a chance to get back on track and show once again that they are a top contender in the 5A Desert league. Having to prove themselves against teams like Gorman, Arbor View, and Legacy, the team’s challenges will be tremendous, but the North Fifth team will be more than ready to take on the challenge.
