FSM Presents: The FSM Prep Rally- Las Vegas High School Football- Week 8
Welcome back to The FSM Prep Rally on Franchise Sports Media. The 702 High School football scene was full of exciting games and lots of upsets during Week 6. In Week 7 we had two top 6 teams face off in what we expectedd to be a high scoring affair, and lots of movement in the FSM Top 10 Rankings.
Green Valley upset Desert Pines on Friday night. Down 14-0 at halftime, the Gators scored 21 unanswered points, on the road, en route to a 21-14 upset win over the Jaguars.
Green Valley was ranked 6th in the FSM Prep Rally Top 10 rankings, while the Jaguars were ranked 4th. That will change this week. It’s time to give the Gators the respect they earned. Much like Arbor View 2 weeks ago, the Gators “weren’t supposed to beat” D.P. only to do so by running the ball right at the Jaguars interior line, and play disciplined football.
The Gators‘ only loss came in Week 3 against Palo Verde. The Green Valley offense stalled in the second half, and a missed extra point was the deciding factor. The Gators have played consistently all season and now face a very tough Liberty team at home on Friday in one of the better matchups taking place. Can the Gators shock the Valley again?
What does this mean for Desert Pines?
There is only the Big 2, not a Big 3 like some members of the D.P. program used to say when it comes to football in Las Vegas. D.P. is no longer going to be mentioned with Bishop Gorman or Liberty when it comes to programs teams fear. Unlike the Gaels and Patriots, any team from the Valley can beat the Jaguars any week. We saw it against Arbor View, Green Valley this year, and a couple of years ago when Centennial beat them in the Nevada Semi-Finals.
Teams no longer look at Desert Pines and go into games saying “We can’t beat them because they have all those D-1, 5-star guys on their team.” In fact, teams have taken the opposite approach when playing the Jaguars. Opposing teams want to beat D.P. because of the lack of respect those teams feel has been shown to them by members of their program in recent years.
The Jaguars are still talented, and a threat to beat nearly any team they play. But this year’s D.P. team seems as if something isn’t right. Maybe all the coaching turnover has caught up with them? Maybe the loss of some really talented players who graduated or transferred out has been too much to overcome? Or maybe it’s something that the public doesn’t know about that is internal? Whatever it is, Desert Pines needs to fix it if they want to make a run at a state title this season and be mentioned in the same breath as Bishop Gorman and Liberty.
On the flip side, Silverado is the real deal.
The Skyhawks are one of the most balanced, disciplined, tough, fast, and smart footballs in the Valley. They are the Class of 4-A this season and it isn’t close. That starts with the coaching and the culture they have built there. You can tell there is real leadership in their program, and the players have bought into it. The team communicates on the field and on the sideline with each other and the coaches. Most importantly, they come ready to play every week.
They may be the most complete team in Las Vegas. They can beat you on the ground, through the air, with their defense, and even on special teams.
Caden Harris, the Skyhawks’ electrifying running back, is one of Las Vegas‘ most slept on players. He is a touchdown waiting to happen every time he touches the ball. He has elite vision, speed, balance, and plays with tremendous heart. The junior is a name that the Las Vegas Valley and colleges need to keep an eye on.
Senior cornerback and running back John Agounke is another player who can take it the distance when the ball is in his hands. Quarterback Brandon Tunnell does an outstanding job leading the offense. He is a highly accurate quarterback who does the little things to win games. Shyne Johnson is another sticky cornerback who just makes plays, having 5 interceptions on the season. Johnson and Agounke form one of the Valley’s best cornerback tandems.
I think this year Skyhawks would give a few 5-A teams a run for their money and still be ranked where they are. Seeing them in person last week, I can away very impressed, and I look forward to seeing them again real soon!
