FSM Exclusive: Las Vegas High School Football News- Gerald Robinson Retires
Centennial High School has implanted itself as one of the top high school football programs in Nevada. Defeating Desert Pines in 2019 to seal their spot for a state title showdown with Henderson powerhouse Liberty Patriots.
Unfortunately, Centennial lost, but that season is undeniably the best season in program history for the Bulldogs. And much of the credit for their success goes to the famous and battle-tested defensive coordinator Gerald Robinson.
Robinson started his coaching career as a defensive backs coach before being promoted to defensive coordinator at Cheyanne high school under coach David Cochran. His time at Cheyenne saw him help the Desert shield improve to a state semi-final game in the 3A division. After coach Cochran’s departure, coach Robinson was faced with a difficult decision, stay at Cheyenne and rebuild the program or leave in search of other opportunities.
“It was a tough decision,” coach Robinson told us at Franchise Sports Media. “My son wanted to go to Cheyenne to play for me, so if I left, he was going to go where I was going to coach at, so I sat down and talked with my family about it, and we decided on Centennial high school.”
At Centennial, which had just hired then first-year head coach Dustin Forshee, Robinson started at the same position as he did under coach Cochran at Cheyenne— a defensive backs coach. Soon enough, however, the issues on defense after the 2017 season led to the change of hats in the Centennial coaching room, and Gerald Robinson was the man now in charge of the defense.
Under his command, the defense improved significantly, enabling the entire team to rise and play winning football in 2018, going 7-3 and earning a playoff date with North Las Vegas powerhouse Desert Pines.
DP was fresh off a state title season in 3A level and Desert Pines beat Centennial 28-7, but for Centennial, it was a massive improvement from their 2017 campaign which saw the Bulldogs go 1-9. The loss left them with inspiration for the next season and honestly pissed off. The Bulldogs used it fueling their campaign throughout the season to their final victory. A rematch with DP at Eldorado high school, where the Bulldogs dominated the game and won 20-7.
“It was satisfying to get that revenge,” coach Robinson said, “to beat a really good program that beat us a year ago, it was very satisfying…Now we had a chance at the Championship.”
Centennial would eventually fall to Liberty, but that season will stay close to coach Robinson’s heart. “We came together at the right time and had a terrific season, it stinks we couldn’t win state, but it was a great ride.”
2020 saw covid-19 strip the fall football season away from Centennial, but it gave Coach Robinson a chance to reflect and see his son sign a D1 letter of intent to Colorado st. University in December–in January, Coach Robinson announced his retirement from coaching.
“It was time, and I’m a couple of years away from retiring from the district [ CCSD]. So I talked with my family, and we decided that it was the right time to hang it up.”
The former UNLV Rebels defensive back retirement saw the Centennial defensive staff break apart and go their separate ways. Still, coach Robinson’s decision was met with acceptance, happiness, and gratitude from players, fellow coaches, and parents of kids he coached during his time on the sidelines.
“G-Rob is one of the best people I have ever met in my life,” said FSM’s Joe Arrigo, who coached with Robinson while at Centennial. “I am a better person for knowing him, I truly mean that. I’m beyond happy for G-Rob, Flossie, Blair, and Gerrick. I am also excited about what G-Rob has in-store for the Las Vegas football community! Stay tuned, it’s gonna be BIG!!”
Coach Robinson plans to spend the next four years traveling across the country to see his son play for Colorado State and becoming part of the ”CSU family”. A deserving end for a man who represents what it truly means to be a football coach.
