FSM Essential Recap: Las Vegas High School Football- Week 2

Week 2 of the 702 High School Football season is in the books and it was another week filled with storylines, drama, and great action on the field. Starting Wednesday night,  three games were canceled, including one just hours before kickoff. This will be a reoccuring theme in the 2021 season, so we may be forced to get used to it.

 

Spring Valley shuts out Cimarron-Memorial 25-0 in a fiesty game:

 

Spring Valley head coach Marcus Teal had his Grizzlies ready to play against Cimarron-Memorial. Led by junior offensive and defensive lineman Kelze Howard, the Grizzlies ended up dominating the Spartans in a 25-0 victory. Howard, who played both left tackle and defensive end, had to be double and triple-teamed on the defensive side of the ball. The 6’5/250 junior gave the Spartans all they could handle and showed why his recruitment will be picking up shortly.

“He’s very athletic for his size. He just has a motor, he keeps going and we’re lucky enough to play him on both sides of the ball. We’d like to have him settle on a set spot, but right now the numbers don’t dictate that,” coach Teal said after the game. “He’s a force on both sides of the ball and once we get him a little more conditioned and he can sustain things in there, I think we’ll be much better and he will continue to show the Valley what he is all about.”

Anthony Otis had a big game for the Grizzlies catching two touchdown passes, a 75 yarder and a 15 yarder, and rushing for another. For Cimarron, Jayden Stevens and Andrew Overland were the most impactful players but were held in check most of the game.

 

The game did have a few stoppages of play, with the last happening with 57 seconds remaining. The lights went out at 10 p.m. which caused the Grizzlie student section to immediately pull out their phones, turn their lights on their phone, and get pumped up. That got the Grizzlies players pumped up and even more excited after their shutout win.

Next week Spring Valley will take on Rancho, who had their game against Pahrump canceled due to COVID-19 and will welcome back a few players that missed the last two weeks.

“I feel good about our team next week. If we get the guys back that we expect, we will have a real good opportunity to display a lot more firepower on offense, and to be a little more stout on defense than we were tonight and last week, and I think it just all better for us” Teal said after the game. “Anytime you play a Leon Evans squad you really got to bring your lunch pale because he’s gonna have those guys ready to go. He really does a great job getting his guys ready to play, regardless of how big, small, slow, or fast they are. We’re looking forward to having a really good game next week.”
