For years Arbor View was known for the double-wing offense. The Aggies would beat you down and mythically wear you out so in the 4th quarter they could run over and by you. Their youth program would run the exact same offense and the players would come into the program ready to go. But Arbor View head coach Matt Gerber decided to switch the offense up to utilize the Aggies skill players and make them multi-faceted.

So far in the 2021 season, the Aggies have been just that.

On Friday night the more experienced Arbor View team beat a young, inexperienced Wildcat squad 44-0 at Las Vegas High School. The Aggies scored early and often with the game getting out of hand mod-way through the second quarter. They scored by air and ground out of the pistol offense. While it was awkward seeing the Aggies offense not in the double-wing, they looked comfortable and even more deadly.

The Wildcats are a team that would have benefited from a 2020 season. Most of their roster is freshmen and sophomores who are getting their first action on the field since youth football. You can see the talent and passion from the young Cats, who are a few years away from being a strong contender at the NIAA 4 A level.

The upset of the night happened at Palo Verde where they shocked the Gators.

The Panthers took on a red-hot Green Valley team Friday night. The Gators were averaging over 50 points a game each of the last two weeks. That didn’t mean a thing to Palo Verde as they beat the Gators 21-20 in the FSM Prep Rally upset of the night.

The Panthers came back from a 14-7 deficit to get their second, and biggest win to date of the 2021 season. Isaiah Wolfe had a touchdown catch as well as a clutch reception on 4th down to keep the chains moving for the Palo Verde and give the Panthers life. With under a minute left in the game, the Panthers scored the eventual game-winning touchdown.

The kids exploded with exuberance after the game,” Palo Verde coach Joe Aznarez said after the game. “It was a total team effort — all of the kids.”

In another upset, the Centennial Bulldogs beat the Legacy Longhorns 9-8 on the strength of three Branden Bayne field goals. This was the Bulldogs‘ first win of the year, while #7 Legacy is now 1-1.
