FSM Preview – Las Vegas High School Football – Week 5 – 2023
It’s Week 5 of the High School football season, and league matchups are happening across the valley. Here’s a preview of some key games taking place in 702HSFB.
Las Vegas High School Football is back!
Welcome to Week 5 of the Las Vegas high school football season!
This week is the first week that Las Vegas high school football teams will face off in league contests. With the new realignment that took place before the start of the season, it eliminated the fifth non-league game (in particular, Mater Dei and Bishop Gorman facing off in a defacto High School National Championship game).
Realignment also made the 5A Division 1 league (only seven teams) a precursor to what the 5A/D1 playoffs will look like. There is also a slight wrinkle in Week 5 of the 702HSFB season. Most of this week’s games will be played today in observance of Rosh Hashanah. So, teams have a short week to get ready for their opponents.
Coming off an exciting Week 4, this week’s slate of games has some intriguing league action, potential upsets in the FSM Prep Rally Top 10, and a potential preview of the 5A/D1 championship game.
It’s time for some Las Vegas high school football action!
FSM Prep Rally Game of the Week: Liberty @ Bishop Gorman
Liberty takes on Bishop Gorman in Week 5 high school football action
The FSM Prep Rally Game of the Week is a head-to-head matchup with #2 Liberty facing off against #1 Bishop Groman.
In an uncharacteristic early season matchup between the top two teams in the state, Bishop Gorman and Liberty will face off in what is unquestionably a potential NIAA 5A/Division 1 Championship Game preview.
Bishop Gorman is coming off a brutal gauntlet of a schedule. The Gaels defeated four nationally ranked teams, all likely finishing in the National Top 25 Rankings. Some consider their non-league schedule the toughest in high school football.
Liberty, who also played a very tough non-league schedule, travels to Bishop Gorman to try and recapture what they did in 2019 when they upset the Gales en route to their 2019 NIAA State Championship.
Bishop Gorman is led by quarterback Micah Alejado, the reigning Gatorade National Player of the Year, Micah Ka’Apana, Elija Lofton, Devon Rice, and arguably the best offensive line in high school football.
The Patriots are by Jayden Roberson, who is arguably the best athlete playing football in the state of Nevada right now. He stars as a wide receiver and cornerback, as well as returns kicks and punts. Liberty also features multiple Division One athletes, including two committed to UNLV, Koi Pa’ao’ao and Jae Beasley.
Who will win this game between Liberty and Bishop Gorman in the FSM Game of the Week?
Here are some matchups from around the Valley that you should keep your eye on!
Here are some other Las Vegas high school football games that 702HSFB fans will want to keep an eye on.
Legacy @ #5 Foothill: #5 Foothill faces off against Legacy in a showdown that will feature one of the best offenses in Las Vegas. The Falcons have been playing dominant football since their Week 1 loss to Clovis East (CA), which has skyrocketed them up the FSM Prep Rally Top 10 rankings. Foothill, 3-1 on the year, has averaged 37.5 ppg this season. The Longhorns enter the game 1-2, coming off a big 49-6 win against Cimarron-Memorial.
El Dorado @ #10 Canyon Springs: #10 Canyon Springs hosts the Sun Devils in a game on the north side of Las Vegas. The Pioneers are 3-0 on the year and coming off a win versus Pinecrest Academy. So far, Canyon Springs is outscoring their opponents 77-28 on the year. El Dorado comes in 1-1 and has outscored their opponents 47-30 on the year.
Desert Oasis @ Cheyenne: Desert Oasis takes on Cheyenne in an evenly-matched game. The Diamondbacks are 1-2 on the year and have been outscored 45-72 this season. The Shields, on the other hand, have been outscored 79-8 so far and are looking for their first win of the year (0-3).
Cimarron-Memorial @ Spring Valley: Cimarron-Memorial travels to Spring Valley with a 2-2 record on the year. So far this season, they have been outscored 69-116 but faced a formidable opponent in Silverado week 1. Spring Valley comes into the game with a record of 1-2. The Grizzlies have been outscored 50-92, but 66 of those points came to Perry High School (AZ), so the numbers may be a little misleading.
