The Green Valley Gators traveled across the Valley to the North End to take on Desert Pines in a match-up between two top 6 teams in the FSM Prep Rally Top 10 Rankings.

The Gators have been a feel-good story, surprising many with their hot start. The only loss on the year so far for Green Valley was to Palo Verde, in week 3. Since then the Gators have been back to their winning ways.

After falling down 14-0 to the Jaguars in the first half, the Gators took a page out of Arbor View’s playbook from two weeks ago when they played and pounded Desert Pines on the ground. Green Valley’s running attack wore down the Jaguars all night. The Gators ran off 21 unanswered points to “upset” Desert Pines 21-14. The Gators defense also stepped up against the Jaguars, all but stopping the offense that scored over 60 points last week against Centennial.

We came out a little slow, but after halftime, it got in our head that we need to win this game,” Green Valley running back Jaylen McKnight said. “And that’s what we did.

On the night McKnight had 23 carries for 176 yards in the win over Desert Pines.

It’s time to give this year’s Green Valley team the respect they have earned and also talk about how this win changes the landscape in Las Vegas High School football.

Desert Pines should no longer be considered one of the 3 best football schools in the city, along with Bishop Gorman and Liberty. What the Jaguars had done in the past is impressive, but times have changed and we have to be honest about it.

Most considered the high school football scene in Las Vegas a 3 team race, with a sizable gap between Gorman, Liberty, and DP, and then there is the rest of the Valley. Not anymore. No longer can anyone consider Desert Pines in the same breath as the Gaels and defending champion Patriots. The Jaguars are not the same team they were 2-3 years ago or even what they could have been last year. They can be beaten by any local team, at any time, and you can’t say that for Gorman or Liberty, at least on a local level.

The 702 high school football scene just got A LOT more interesting and we still have a few weeks to go until the playoffs start. Buckle up, it’s gonna be a wild ride!

It was a high scoring night for teams across the Valley. The defenses were offensive!

The Foothill Falcons won the right for FSM to come to their game against Legacy Friday night by outvoting the Valley. The Falcons got off to a slow start but went into halftime with a 12-0 lead. The Longhorns looked like they might have had an excellent week of practice, but laid an egg on game night.

The Falcons defense really came to play and stopped the Legacy offense on multiple occasions. Missed assignments and lack of execution plagued the Longhorns all night, while the Foothill offense got rolling in the second half en route to a 32-12 win.

In another blowout win, Silverado beat Cimarron-Memorial 56-12. The Skyhawks were impressive from the opening kick-off to the final whistle. Kayden Harris, the Skyhawks’ electrifying running back, had a dominant performance against the Spartans. He had 3 touchdowns in the first half, including a 57-yard run that showed his balance, vision, cut-back ability, and speed.

But even more impressive was the Skyhawk defense, who brings pressure as much as any team I’ve seen in the Valley all season. They are physical, tough, fast, have length, and playmakers in the secondary. I may be crazy and catch some heat for saying this, but I think Silverado can compete at the 5A level. I will be back to catch the Skyhawks again this season.
