What can be said about this year’s Gorman team that everyone in Las Vegas doesn’t know already? After finishing the regular season with a 10-1 record and securing a top-5 national ranking, it’s common knowledge that Bishop Gorman is as scary as ever in 2022.

Following their loss in a close game to #1 nationally ranked Mater Dei in week 2, the Gaels seemed to take the defeat personally and took their frustrations out on the remaining teams on their schedule. Gorman followed their lone loss of the season by dominating their remaining out-of-state opponents before really getting brutal in league play.

Through the remaining five weeks of the regular season, Gorman thrashed their league opponents while not giving up a single point. The streak continued into the postseason as the Gaels defeated Faith Lutheran in the quarter-finals, giving them a six-game winning streak against Nevada opponents with a point deficit of 407-0 (including the playoffs).

This week, the Gaels host Desert Pines in the Region Semifinals, and despite Gorman’s dominant reign over Nevada opponents this year, the Jaguars just might have a fighting chance.

The Jaguars looked good through the 2022 season. After dropping their first game of the year to out-of-state opponent Orem, Desert Pines defeated their next seven opponents and sat as the top team in the 5A Southern-Mountain league. It wasn’t until the final game of the regular season that Desert Pines suffered their second loss of the year to Liberty and missed out on securing a league title.

Putting the two regular season losses aside, the Jaguars looked solid against a team in Liberty that is considered one of the best in Nevada after holding them to just 16 points. Along with looking pretty dominant in their 48-7 victory over Palo Verde in the quarterfinals, it will take everything they have. Still, Desert Pines may have what it takes to go toe-to-toe with Bishop Gorman in this week’s Semifinals. Or, at the very least, separate themselves from the rest of Gorman’s victims and score a point.

4-A Quarterfinals

Silverado vs. Sierra Vista

Silverado has had the Nevada 4A division on lock for some time now. Starting back in the 2021 season, the Skyhawks went undefeated and convincingly won the 4A state title, 61-27, over Shadow Ridge.

Now in 2022, the 4A juggernauts look just as potent this year as they concluded the regular season going undefeated again and securing a first-round bye in this year’s postseason. With players like seniors Donavyn Pellot and Caden Harris leading the charge, the Skyhawks have been one of the most dominant teams in Nevada over the last two seasons.

At the end of this regular season, I truly believed it didn’t matter who was unlucky enough to meet Silverado in the second round. The Skyhawks would have the victory secured before the opening kick-off. But after witnessing one of the best games of the year from Sierra Vista vs Durango in last week’s first-round game, I’m not so sure it will be that easy for reigning 4A champs as we advance.

Sierra Vista went through an all-out war last week against Durango in a game that saw multiple lead changes and plenty of close calls for the Mountain Lions. Though comparing Durango to Silverado doesn’t make a good case for why Silverado should take Sierra Vista seriously, it would be relevant to mention just how tough the Mountian Lions looked last week.

Sierra Vista not only edged out an overtime victory over a team in Durango that already beat them once in the regular season, but they also overcame an onslaught of penalties called by an officiating team that seemed to be more than willing to throw a flag or miss a call at any moment.

The fact that Sierra Vista found a way to get the victory over Durango with everything stacked against them shows just how gritty this Mountain Lions team is. As Silverado looks to continue its dominant rule over the 4A division this week in the quarterfinals, Sierra Vista will undoubtedly be prepared to fight for all four quarters and give the sitting champs a real challenge in the second round of the playoffs.
