The 5A State Championship Game wrapped up on Saturday as Nevada has its 2022  champions! This week, Bishop Gorman (12-1) traveled up to Carson City to face the Bishop Manogue Miners (11-2) for the 2022 5A State Title.

After another exciting 2022 high school football season, this year’s 5A state championship came down to just two teams. The #5 nationally ranked Bishop Gorman Gaels and the Bishop Manogue Miners met in Nevada’s state capital on Saturday to decide who would take home the title of the best high school team in Nevada and the 2022 state championship.

Bishop Gorman is your Nevada 5A state champion for the second year in a row. The Gaels’ secured their 19th football state title on Saturday, tying the record with Reno for the most prominent conference high school football championships in Nevada’s history. For a school to tie such a record requires years of dedication to excellence and performing at the highest level, as the Gorman Gaels have exemplified throughout their reign over Nevada high school football.

No player displayed those traits better on Saturday than The FSM Prep Rally Player of the Game, Micah Kaapana, as the third-year Gael opened the game with a 51-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage.

Up 7-0, Bishop Gorman would regain possession of the ball after stopping the Miners on defense. On their second offensive possession, Kaapana would score again on the drive’s first play, this time rushing for an 81-yard touchdown to put the Gaels up 14-0. Kaapana would finish with four carries for over 230-yards and four touchdowns, along with a 41-yard touchdown reception, before being sat for the second half.

The Gaels managed to score on the first play of each of their first three offensive drives, ultimately outscoring Bishop Manogue 42-6 in the opening quarter. With the game pretty much decided, the Gaels held the Miners scoreless throughout the remainder of the game while also putting up four more touchdowns to clinch the 5A state title with a 70-6 final score.

At the conclusion of another season, Bishop Gorman finishes the year as the Nevada State Champions. Gorman has looked dominant in previous title runs, but this season’s Gorman team mainly looked unchallenged. Starting the season going 4-1 with one of the most demanding out-of-state schedules in the country, Gorman spent the second half of the year outscoring their in-state opponents, 574-23, on their way to the state title.

Next year’s Gorman team already looks impressive. With many core players remaining and a possible rise in the rankings going into the off-season, Gorman might have the opportunity to turn this year’s success into an opportunity to reach further heights in the 2023 season.
