The 702HSFB season concludes in a bowl game! The newley-annointed Nevada state champion, Bishop Gorman Gaels, faced off this week against the Florida state champions, the Chaminade-Madonna Lions, in the 2022 Geico State Champions Series, hosted at Fertitta Field.

Four weeks after the 2022 Nevada high school football title, 702HSFB continued on for one more game as two nationally ranked state champions went bowling. This year’s Geico State Champions Series featured the No. 3 ranked Bishop Gorman Gaels, hosting the No. 6 ranked Florida state champions, the Chaminade-Madonna Lions.

Chaminade-Madonna had the rare opportunity this week to experience what it is like to be in any high school in Nevada not named Bishop Gorman. Facing the Gaels in postseason play, the Lions suffered a 49-14 beatdown to end their season. But unlike the Gaels‘ in-state opponents, Chaminade-Madonna was able to enjoy the feeling of winning a state championship before Gorman got ahold of them. This year’s high school bowl game went about the same way as every post-season game Gorman plays.

The first quarter began with the Lions receiving the first offensive possession, then turning the ball over after failing to move the ball downfield. Gorman then answered their first defensive stop of the game with their first offensive touchdown as junior Micah Alejado completed a 16-yard pass to the FSM Prep Rally Player of the Game, junior Elija Lofton. On the next drive, the Lions completed a long pass down the field and were close to the red zone. But after failing to convert the first down, Gorman regained possession and quickly got down inside the 10-yard line at the end of the first quarter, setting up a quick rushing score from junior Micah Kaapana to start the second.

Down 14-0, the Lions needed to come up with some points on their third drive. After driving to Gorman’s 20-yard line, Chaminade-Madonna seemed to be back on track, but a fumble turned the ball over back to the Gaels. The Nevada state champs went on to lead 21-0, with Lofton scoring a rushing touchdown. With only a few minutes left before halftime, Bishop Gorman managed to force another turnover and set up another rushing score from Lofton to go up 28-0.

At this point, the game seemed decided. But with their last possession of the half, Chaminade-Madonna managed to get into the endzone to score in the last minute. Then, in the opening drive of the second half, the Lions finally got a stop on defense and scored their second touchdown, making the score 28-14.

With two unanswered scores and two more quarters to play, the Lions seemed poise to make a second-half comeback. But Bishop Gorman’s defense clamped down following their second score, and Chaminade-Madonna failed to reach the end zone again for the rest of the game. With Lofton scoring two more touchdowns in the second half, giving the junior 5 touchdowns total on the day, the Gaels secured the 49-14 victory and established themselves as this year’s 2022 Geico Bowl Champions.

Coming into this week’s Geico State Championship Series, the Lions were ranked 6th in the nation after securing their fifth state title in seven years. With Florida having a long history of producing football talent, it’s easy to see why many would have thought this game between two top-10 ranked teams was going to be close.

But Chaminade-Madonna got handled by Bishop Gorman to a point where it looked similar to the Gaels‘ in-state playoff games against local low-ranked schools, showing that whether you are a nationally high-ranked school from one of the best football states in the country, or a local Clark-County team hoping to dethrone the champs, the Gaels will humble you all the same.
