FSM Essential Recap: Las Vegas High School Football – Playoffs Round 2 – 2022

www.FranchiseSportsMedia.com

The second round of the 2022 702 HSFB playoffs wrapped up this Friday night with another great slot of postseason matchups. This week’s FSM Prep Rally highlight game was between Bishop Gorman and Desert Pines in the 5A Region Semifinals.

This week, the Desert Pines Jaguars (8-2) traveled to Fertitta Field to take on the Bishop Gorman Gaels (10-1) in the Region Semifinals. Leading up to this week, the Gaels have been stingy on defense, not allowing a single point to their previous six Nevada opponents. Meanwhile, the Jaguars have managed to keep teams from scoring themselves, holding Liberty to just 16 points in their final regular season game and defeating Palo Verde 48-7 in last week’s Region Quarterfinals.

Bishop Gorman began the first quarter in typical fashion, scoring on a quick six-play drive to go up 7-0. Desert Pines took over and marched down to the middle of the field on the ensuing drive. After converting back-to-back 3rd and long situations, the Jaguars had their first big play of the game with a 22-yard run from senior Malik Jones, setting Desert Pines up at the 1-yard line. After three straight run attempts were stuffed at the goal line, the Jaguars faced a 4th and one and looked to be going for the touchdown.

However, the drive would stall after a false start from a Jaguars lineman and brought Desert Pines back to the 6-yard line. The Jaguars elected to kick the field goal and became the first Nevada team this season to score points on Gorman this year, making the score 7-3 at the end of the period.

Gorman began the quarter with possession of the ball and faced a 3rd and ten from their own 22-yard line. The Gaels would convert the first down with a 12-yard pass to senior Zach Branch. On the next play, Gorman would convert a bubble screen pass for a significant gain, but an unnecessary roughness penalty would take away the yards and force Gorman back to their own 11-yard line, with a 1st and 33 situation. The Gaels managed to get all the way back up to the 42-yard line for a 4th and two situation. Gorman attempted to convert with a bubble screen pass, but the Jaguars’ defensive backfield played aggressively and stopped the play for no gain, giving the ball back to the Desert Pines offense at Gorman’s 42-yard line.

After failing to get the first down marker and punting the ball back to the Gaels, Bishop Gorman started their drive at the 14-yard line and went 86-yards to score their second touchdown of the half, going up 14-3 over Desert Pines.

With 3:40 left before halftime, Desert Pines started their drive at their own 20-yard line. The Jaguar’s offense struggled to move the ball, but multiple penalties from Bishop Gorman moved the ball for Desert Pines up to the 50-yard line. After giving up 30 yards to Desert Pines due to penalties, the Bishop Gorman defense made up for the lost yards as senior Jeremiah Hughes intercepted a Jaguars pass and ran the ball all the way to the 7-yard line.

Starting their drive 7 yards away from the goal line, junior Micah Alejado attempted to run for the touchdown but was met at the goal line and fumbled the ball, allowing Desert Pines to recover the ball in the endzone and regain possession at the 20-yard line. With 1:09 left in the quarter, the Jaguars elected to run out the clock, sending the game into halftime.

Desert Pines started the second half on offense but failed to convert the first down and were forced to punt. After popping off a 61-yard run from the junior Micah Kaapana, Gorman punched the ball into the endzone two plays later to make the score 21-3. After failing to move the ball again on their next drive, Desert Pines attempted to punt the ball, but a roughing the kicker penalty from Gorman gave Desert Pines another shot on offense with a fresh set of downs.

The Jaguar’s drive would be ended quickly, though, as the Gaels intercepted another pass, giving the ball back to their offense. Near the endzone, Bishop Gorman looked to score their fourth touchdown as Alejado attempted to run for the endzone again but was met at the goal line by multiple Desert Pines defenders and fumbled the ball for the second time, giving Desert Pines the ball at their own 1-yard line. In need of positive momentum, Desert Pines attempted to move away from their endzone but failed to move past the 1-yard line and elected to punt again.

The Gaels would manage to block the punt, setting them up at the Jaguar’s 6-yard line and a 6-yard touchdown run, going up 27-3 over Desert Pines before the end of the third quarter.

After stopping another Desert Pines offensive drive, Gorman began the fourth quarter driving down to the 1-yard line. From there, Gorman punched the ball into the endzone for the fifth time to go up 34-3 over Desert Pines. Gorman scored one final time as the FSM Prep Rally Player of the Game; senior Trech Kekahuna caught a 6-yard touchdown pass to end the game with a 41-3 final score.

Kekahuna finished the game with 168 yards and a touchdown catch, giving him over a thousand receiving yards and 19 touchdowns on the year, a Bishop Gorman school record. Junior Micah Alejado also set a new school record after throwing for 47 touchdown passes through the 2022 season.

Despite committing multiple penalties and allowing Desert Pines to keep drives alive throughout the game, Bishop Gorman still put up a dominant performance. After their win in the second round of the playoffs, Bishop Gorman now moves on to the Region Finals and will face the Liberty Patriots to see who will move on to the 5A State Championship Game.
