Week 1 of the 702 High School Football season is done. The FSM Prep Rally Game of the Week was at Bishop Gorman High School, where the Gaels took on Corner Canyon (Utah). The Chargers have a good, young quarterback in Isaac Wilson, the younger brother of New York Jets’ QB Zach Wilson.

This game would be the first test for Bishop Gorman, who didn’t want to get caught looking ahead to next week’s big game against Mater Dei. Could the Chargers’ defense stop Zach Branch, Micah Alejado & the powerful Gaels’ offense? Would Gorman’s secondary hold up against Wilson and his talented receiving corps?

Across town, Silverado traveled to the North West to take on a young and improved Centennial team. Could one of the best players in the city, Donavyn Pellot, and the dominating Skyhawk team continue their unbeaten streak (since 2019) and defeat the 5A Bulldogs? Or would Centennial upset the #3 team in the FSM Prep Rally high school poll?

Bishop Gorman faced Corner Canyon from Draper, Utah, for their first game of the 2022 season Friday night. The Chargers came into the game with an impressive win already under their belt from their season opener a week prior. The Utah team, led by QB Isaac Wilson, had over 400 yards and six touchdowns in their 2022 debut. The Chargers came into this week’s game hoping to have the same success throwing the ball against Gorman.

The Gaels shut down any chance of a possible air raid from Corner Canyon early. The first quarter began with the Chargers starting the game with the first offensive possession. Their drive ended quickly after an incomplete pass, a sack from LB Palaie Faoa, and a failed screen attempt on third down. Bishop Gorman didn’t take long to answer after getting the ball for their first offensive possession. It took three plays for Bishop Gorman to score their first points of the game, with QB Micah Alejado running eight yards for a touchdown.

Corner Canyon’s second offensive drive looked similar to their first. After a failed QB run, a batted pass by DE Jonah Leaea, and another failed screen pass attempt on third down, the Chargers were forced to punt again. Bishop Gorman completed their second drive with another rushing TD from DeVon Rice, making the score 14-0 in the first quarter.

The Gaels would continue to score in the second quarter with a touchdown catch from TE Elija Lofton and a pick-6 from LB Quincy Davis. The Chargers finally scored on their final offensive drive of the half, throwing a touchdown pass with 36 seconds left before halftime. It would be their only score of the game as Bishop Gorman held Corner Canyon from the endzone for the rest of the game and finished Friday night with their first win of the season, beating Corner Canyon 42-7.

The Gaels looked impressive in their season debut. Their defense looked stout, thanks partly to the performance of FSM’s player of the game, Jeremiah Hughes. However, as impressive as the #6 nationally ranked team looked, there are still things to clean up. Gorman committed multiple penalties throughout the game on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. The Gaels will tighten things up as they prepare for their big showdown next week against the #2 ranked Mater Dei Monarchs.

4A Silverado took on 5A Centennial and came away with a resounding victory.

The #3 ranked Skyhawks scored the first 34 points en route to a 57-7 victory over Centennial. Brandon Tunnell passed for 298 yards and four touchdowns, and all-everything athlete Donavyn Pellot ran for 93 yards and caught four passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns for the Skyhawks. Silverado running back Caden Harris also went over 100 yards on the night (101) and had three touchdowns, including an 80-yard kick return for a touchdown.

Our big thing going into this game will be replacing our linemen. We lost some big pieces up front,” Silverado head coach Andy Ostolaza said after the game. “Brandon had a good night. He started a little shaky on those first drives, but he battled back and threw some great long balls.”

The Skyhawks had 488 total yards, including 190 rushing yards on only 19 carries.
