The final regular season of the 702 high school football season wrapped up with another great slate of high school football! In the FSM Prep Rally Game of the Week, Liberty hosted Desert Pines, with the winner determining the 5A Southern Mountain League champions

Liberty Head Coach Rich Morroco has built his Patriots program specifically. It is a high character, no fear; give us your best shot because we will give you ours, with long-term success as the goal. Under coach Morroco, the Liberty Patriots have won a state title (2019) and would have been in an excellent position to repeat if it weren’t for the pandemic in 2020. But Liberty didn’t cry or complain about it. They just went out and played ball.

The Patriots started off slow this season, playing one of the nation’s most demanding schedules, only to again dominate the local teams they played in the regular season. Coming into this week’s FSM Prep Rally Game of the Week against Desert Pines, Liberty was 5-3 and looked dominant in each victory.

The Jaguars once again have an explosive, athletic team. Coming into this week’s game, they were 7-1 and defeated each of their opponents by at least 18-points, outscoring them to the tune of 300-66 throughout the year. In addition, the Desert Pines rushing attack had tallied over 1400 yards and 21 touchdowns through their first eight games.

Heading into this game, there was a lot at stake for each of these teams. The winner would win the 5A Mountain League title, and the loser would have to take on Bishop Gorman in two weeks (provided they win their first-round playoff game next week).

In the words of Big Ant from the FSM Prep Rally, “This is going to be a war.” That statement lived up to the hype as we saw a defensive battle from the jump!

After each team punted in their first possessions, Liberty struck first. Junior wide receiver Jayden Roberton caught a 5-yard touchdown pass to give the Patriots a 7-0 lead. Just four plays later, the Jaguars center snapped the ball over the punter’s head for a safety. It was now 9-0 Liberty, and some thought the route was on.

But Desert Pines showed toughness as Izley Manutai scored on a 3-yard pass from Marquis Roby.

From then on, the game would remain scoreless until 48 seconds left on the clock. Then, Patriots running back Isaiah Lauofo took the handoff and ran 50+ yards to the 1-yard line, where he punched it in a play later to make the score 16-7. The Jaguars couldn’t come back, and Liberty came away victorious.

The FSM Prep Rally Player of the Game was Liberty safety Ryden-James Dacosin who had two interceptions, giving him nine on the year. His nine interceptions are tied for the most in a season in Liberty history.

Liberty now plays Foothill, while Desert Pines takes on Palo Verde next week in round 1 of the NIAA playoffs.
