Week 2 of the 702 High School Football season is complete. The FSM Prep Rally Game of the Week was at Bishop Gorman High School, where the Gaels took on Mater Dei (CA).

With the Monarchs coming into this week’s game ranked #2 in the country, #6 Bishop Gorman prepared to play this week with national title implications on the line.

Fertitta field was buzzing with excitement on Friday as Bishop Gorman took on the reigning national high school football champions, Mater Dei. Both sidelines contained famous alumni from both schools, such as former Heisman winner Matt Leinart and former top-ranked high school QB Tate Martell, Bubba Bolden, Haskell Garrett, Alex Perry, and Xavier Grimble. Even former USC wide receiver Marqise Lee was in attendance. The excitement surrounding Friday’s game was justified, as the winner would possibly go on to secure a 2022 high school national championship.

Bishop Gorman started the game hot as they held off Mater Dei in their first drive and forced them to go 3-and-out. They followed up their first defensive stop with a 64-yard TD pass to Junior TE Elijah Lofton, claiming the first lead of the game, 7-0. The Gaels continued to be stout on defense as they forced a turnover on downs after stopping the Monarchs on 4th and 4. The Gaels then marched down the field and completed their second offensive drive with a touchdown pass from Junior Quarterback Micah Alejado to improve their lead, 14-0.

The Gaels had an impressive start to the game as they held Mater Dei to zero points and had two unanswered touchdowns in the first quarter, but the second quarter would show cracks in the Gaels’ armor.

In their third offensive drive of the game, Gorman would be forced to punt after failing to get a first down on a 3rd and 23. Mater Dei would take advantage of the opportunity and marched down the field, finishing their drive with a touchdown pass making the score 14-7.

After allowing Bishop Gorman to score two touchdowns in the first quarter, Mater Dei ramped up their defensive pressure, and it showed throughout the second quarter.

During the Gael’s next offensive drive, the Monarchs pressured Alejado to force an incomplete pass on first down. They continued the pressure and sacked Alejado for a 6-yard loss on second down. On third down, The Gaels attempted a screen pass but were intercepted by a Mater Dei defensive lineman who almost ran the ball back for a touchdown before he was stripped of the ball and gave Gorman the ball on their own 1-yard line.

Mater Dei would continue to hold firm on the defensive side of the ball as the game went into halftime without either team scoring again.

As the second half of the game began, Gorman managed to retrieve some of their momenta back as they completed a 70-yard drive with a contested touchdown pass thrown to Senior WR Zach Branch, making the score 21-7.

Mater Dei refused to go away, though, as they answered the Gaels score with a 50-yard touchdown drive of their own, making the score 21-14.

As the fourth quarter began, Mater Dei scored a 21-yard touchdown pass on third down, tying the game up for the first time since the opening kick-off, 21-21.

Gorman would attempt to regain the lead as they marched down to the 14-yard line but failed to get a first and missed a field goal attempt, giving the ball back to Mater Dei with 6:52 left in the game.

The Monarchs were able to drive down the field and kick a field goal at the 8-yard line, giving them their first lead of the game, 24-21.

With 3:32 left, Bishop Gorman had plenty of time to score points to either tie or regain the lead, and in their next offensive possession, they managed to drive down to the 32-yard line with 2:05 left.

On first down, Mater Dei forced an incomplete pass. On second down, Micah Kaapana was stuffed in the backfield for a loss of 2. On third down, just as they had done since the second quarter, Mater Dei held strong on defense and blitzed, getting a sack and forcing Gorman into 4th and 25 with 42 seconds left in the game. The Gaels attempted to pass and pitch the ball to get the first down but could not execute the pitch and turned the ball over to Mater Dei, who killed the clock and secured the win over the Gaels.

Despite the difficult loss, the Gaels competed hard and, at times, seemed poised to defeat the reigning high school national champions. Though it might be challenging to secure a national championship this season, Gorman still has a long schedule to play and will regroup as they move on to week 3 in Hawaii to take on the St. Louis Crusaders.
