Week 4 of the 702 High School Football season wrapped up with another great week of football, including the FSM Prep Rally Game of the Week, Spring Valley vs. Desert Oasis.

In week 4 of the 2022 season, the 2-1 Grizzlies faced off against 1-1 Desert Oasis as both teams competed to solidify themselves as genuine contenders in the Nevada 4A football division.

Spring Valley came out of week 4 outscoring their opponent, Desert Oasis, by 27 points. However, despite the final score, the game between the Grizzlies and Diamondbacks was close and competitive, at least through the first three quarters.

The first quarter began with Spring Valley receiving the first offensive possession. The Grizzlies came out running the ball for small gains. The game’s first big play came from senior Ti’Shaun Ereaux-Jackson as he connected with junior Ethan Shuford for a long pass to set up the Grizzlies at the Desert Oasis 6-yard line. After a failed snap slipped through Jackson’s hands and brought them all the way back to the 15-yard line, the Grizzlies went 4-and-out and gave the ball to the Desert Oasis offense.

In what could have been an opportunity to score the first points of the game and claim the momentum, the Diamondbacks’ first offensive possession was cut short thanks to the FSM Prep Rally co-player of the game, senior Kelze Howard. The Oregon State commit made a play to tackle Desert Oasis‘ running back in the backfield that caused a fumble and gave Spring Valley the ball back in the red zone. The Grizzlies would go on to score the first touchdown of the game as junior Tipisone Manu ran it up the middle on the 1-yard line to make the score 7-0.

Both teams would have solid defensive performances, as neither Spring Valley nor Desert Oasis could score any points for the rest of the first quarter and most of the second quarter. After driving down the length of the field in the final minute of the first half, Desert Oasis was able to score a touchdown with a pass inside the 5-yard line. After a missed extra point attempt, the score going into halftime sat at 7-6.

After a competitive first half, Spring Valley began to pull away from the Diamondbacks. They scored 26 unanswered points in the second half, including a 101-yard interception return for a touchdown from Desert Oasis transfer and FSM’s coplayer of the game, sophomore Kory Villarreal.

Despite suffering from penalties and mental errors in the first half, Spring Valley’s defense and impressive performances from key players kept the Grizzlies in a position to eventually go on a scoring spree and blowout the Diamondbacks for their third win of the season.

Spring Valley now sits at 3-1, the best record they’ve had to start a season since 2008, and they seem to be legit contenders in the 4A Nevada high school division.
