FSM Essential Recap: Las Vegas High School Football Week 8- 2022
Week 8 of the 702 HSFB season is in the books as we wrap up another round of great games all across the city. This week, the FSM Prep Rally Game of the Week featured the 1-5 Green Valley Gators traveling to take on the 4-3 Liberty Patriots in a matchup between two 5A Southern-Mountain Leauge rivals.
With only two weeks of the 2022 regular season remaining, teams are beginning to make their final push for league titles and playoff seatings. The FSM Prep Rally Game of the Week featured the Liberty Patriots hosting the Green Valley Gators as the Patriots looked to get a needed victory to stay in the race for the 5A Southern-Mountain League.
Patriots handle buisness as they defeat Green Valley, 37-7 :
In a game that was a must-win for Liberty to stay in the hunt for a league title, the Patriots looked determined to get a victory against the Gators from the jump.
The first quarter began with Liberty getting off to a fast start with a long return on the opening kick-off to get inside Green Valley’s 20-yard line. The home team took advantage of their excellent opening field position and scored the first points of the game with a touchdown catch from the FSM Prep Rally Player of the Game, junior Isaiah Lauofo.
Green Valley received the ball after the quick opening score and began their first offensive possession. However, it was a short drive for the Gators as junior Jayden Robertson intercepted a pass and gave the ball back to the Patriots offense. Robertson followed his big play on defense with another on offense with a 44-yard touchdown catch on the next drive, giving Liberty a 14-0 lead.
The Gators struggled mightily in the first quarter. On top of allowing Liberty to score two touchdowns on defense and failing to score on offense, Green Valley struggled to capitalize on big play opportunities. Multiple dropped passes from their wide receivers killed any chance of consistency on offense, while dropped batted passes and coverage mistakes on defense made it easy for the Patriots to put points up on the board.
In the first period, the lone bright spot for the Gators was keeping Liberty out of the endzone on their third drive and forcing them to take a field goal, making the score 17-0 going into the second quarter.
Green Valley performed better in the second quarter as their defense made stops and forced Liberty to punt on multiple drives. The Gators almost kept the Patriots scoreless throughout the second quarter. Still, in the final minute before halftime, they failed to stop Liberty as Robertson caught his second touchdown of the night, making the score 23-0 going into halftime.
Coming out of the half, the Gators seemed to make necessary adjustments as their offense took the field. Quick passes and fast tempo allowed Green Valley to work their way down the field and score their first points of the night with a 5-yard touchdown pass, making the score 23-7.
The impressive drive to open the second half would be the final highlight for the Gators. LIberty’s defense prevented them from scoring the rest of the night while their offense tacked on two more touchdowns to make the final score 37-7.
Now sitting at 5-3 on the year, Liberty goes into their bye week with positive momentum leading up to their season finale against 6-1 Desert Pines. The final game of the regular season will be a winner-takes-all match as the Jaguars and Patriots will face off to see who will take home the 5A Southern-Mountain league title and claim the better seating in the postseason.
Shadow Ridge holds off Coronado’s late game push to beat the Cougars, 28-21
Shadow Ridge edged out a victory Friday night against their league rival Coronado and now sits on top of the 4A Sky League.
Just as they’ve done all year, the Mustangs used their potent rushing attack on offense to build a significant lead for most of the game, while their defense held Coronado to just seven points through the first three quarters. Then, at the start of the fourth quarter, the Mustangs scored their fourth and final touchdown of the night, giving them a 28-7 lead.
Despite a last-minute surge from Coronado, in which they scored 14 unanswered points to make it a one-score game, the Mustangs held off the Cougars and secured their seventh win of the year.
Now sitting at the top of their league, Shadow Ridge is in a great position to win their league and secure home-field advantage in the postseason.
