The defending champs, the Liberty Patriots, kicked off their season against Arbor View and came away with a decisive 42-14 victory. Liberty head coach Rich Muraco had his team ready to go and defend their state championship, and they looked primed to do just that.

Liberty was led by their quarterback, UNLV football commit Jayden Maiava, who displayed all the tools that make him one of the best quarterback prospects in Las Vegas.

It was the first game for new Bishop Gorman head coach Brent Browner, who took over for Kenny Sanchez. The Gaels took on a very good St. Louis (Hawaii) team, who had a massive offensive line and a tough, athletic quarterback. Bishop Gorman was led on offense by running back Cam Barfield, who is committed to Boston College. He had 4 touchdowns in two and a half quarters’ worth of work. On defense, Cyrus Moss was the best player on the field. The defensive end was causing havoc all game, repeatedly hitting the St. Louis quarterback, causing him to leave the game due to an ankle injury.

Speaking of quarterbacks in that game, sophomore Micah Alejado made his much-anticipated debut after two years of waiting for Gorman fans. Alejado came out a little too pumped up, but once he got settled and comfortable, you could see why Bishop Gorman’s offensive coordinator Craig Canfield is so high on his signal-caller. Alejado remained poised and calm in the pocket and showed great touch and arm strength on his throws. A coach told me after the game, “Micah could be the tip of the spear for Gorman. He is the best quarterback at Bishop Gorman since Dorian Thompson-Robinson and could be right there with him and Tate Martell when it’s all said and done.”

Desert Pines took on Palo Verde and showed why they are always in the mix for competing for a state title. The Jaguars are once again athletic and will beat up on teams that can’t match up with their athleticism. Stud senior running back Jovantae Barnes had three touchdowns and showed why he is considered one of the best running backs in the state.

Lastly, Franchise Sports Media broke the news late Monday night that Bishop Manogue (Reno) decided to pull out of their scheduled game against Bishop Gorman this Friday. The reasoning is the wildfires in Nothern California which are causing unhealthy air quality in Reno. Due to the unhealthy air quality, high school teams have been unable to practice. It has also caused the University of Nevada Reno to practice at Stanford University for the past 2 weeks.

The Manogue coaches decided that they’d rather be safe than sorry and not risk any long-term health ailments with their players, staff, and families.
