Welcome back to The FSM Prep Rally on Franchise Sports Media. The 702 High School football scene was full of exciting games and blowouts during Week 4. In Week 5 we have the oldest rivalry in the Valley taking place, a battle between two Top 5 teams, and in the Prep Rally Top 10 will we see a new #1 team?

The Polynesian Classic had the Top 3 teams in action over the weekend and arguably the best game, well the closest game of the football showcase, was the first game of the weekend. Desert Pines took on Orem (UT) and benefited from seven turnovers to a tune of 53 points. But Orem kept hanging around even with all of the turnovers to make it close, putting up 42 points.

In the late game on Friday, Mater Dei showed why they are the #1 team in the country, scoring 42 points in the 1st half against Liberty in a 49-7 win. The Monarchs did this without arguably their best player, USC commit Domani Jackson, who was out with an injury. The was Liberty’s only game against a nationally ranked opponent outside of Las Vegas.

In the final game, Bishop Gorman beat Lone Peak (UT) 35-7. The Gaels controlled the game from the opening kickoff, with Lone Peak scoring the touchdown after a Gorman fumble. But Zachariah Branch’s punt return for a touchdown killed any hope Lone Peak had. By beating Lone Peak, the Gaels now have all 3 wins vs teams ranked in the Top 60 in the country.

Lastly, I want to address the new 6 pm start time for football games. This is a reaction to a situation that took place at Desert Oasis last week. A fight broke out and gunshots were fired at the end of D.O.’s game last week. Thankfully no one was hurt.

Now, I get adding new safety protocols and ramping up security, but starting a game 1 hour earlier is NOT going to stop ANYONE from shooting or from doing anything they are already willing to do. Neither is playing games on Saturdays, like CCSD was and still may be, trying to implement. That would only HURT local kids being recruited since they wouldn’t be able to take official visits to colleges. It’s already difficult to go in and out of state, on Saturdays for official visits.

I think this is a knee-jerk reaction, to an extent. If this would have happened at a school in the hood, it’s sad to say, but no one would bat an eyelash or make any type of changes. But because it was at a more affluent school, now there is a problem. Well, that is the problem. Just like in the real world, there is a different set of rules when things hit too close to home.

Well, it’s time to change that. If anyone at CCSD wants to sit down and have a REAL conversation and come up with REAL solutions, reach out to me. I would GLADLY meet with you, and help find solutions to this issue rather than do what is currently being done, which may look like something, but really is nothing at all.
