This week’s FSM Prep Rally Game of the Week saw the Corona Centennial Huskies travel up the 15 freeway to face off against the #1-ranked Bishop Gorman Gaels.

For Gorman, this was the final game of a grueling non-league schedule. It is likely that all four of their out-of-state opponents finish in the national top 25, with Miami Central finishing in the top 5. The Gaels wanted to make a statement and leave no stone unturned or no box unchecked heading into league play next week.

This was the first time the perennial powerhouse out of Corona, California, has left the state to take on an opponent. The Huskies also had a familiar face on their sideline in former Gael Tavian McNair, while the Gaels had former Huskie Marco Coleman playing for them.

On paper, this game looked like it would be a high-scoring affair.

Centennial, under long-time and legendary head coach Matt Logan, is known for its high-powered offense. Conversely, Bishop Gorman may have the best offense in high school football this season, led by Craig Canfield, who directs the Gaels‘ offense.

Going into the game, it looked like it would be a long night for both defenses. It was a long night, but only for one of the defenses.

On the game’s first possession, the Gaels stopped the Huskies on 4th down on the plus side of the field, taking over at the 29-yard line. Bishop Gorman jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a Devon Rice TD on their first play from scrimmage with a 29-yard TD run. Gorman then scored 14 more unanswered points to make it a 21-7 score after the first quarter.

By halftime, the score was 35-7, and the game was well in hand. The Huskies had no answer for Bishop Gorman’s offense all game and uncharacteristically had a running clock put on them. The Gaels defense also stepped up, forcing five first-half Husky turnovers en route to a 56-28 win over Centennial.

Bishop Gorman quarterback Micah Alejado again showed why he is the reigning National Gatorade Player of the Year. Alejado finished the game, completing 15 of 20 passes and throwing for 200 yards and five touchdowns. The nation’s top tight end, Elija Lofton, had two touchdowns, one on the ground and the other on a reception, and the Gaels’ defense was smothering all game as they frustrated the Centennial offense.

The case can easily be made that Bishop Gorman is the top team in the nation after this victory over Corona Centennial. The Huskies lost 28-14 to #1 ranked Mater Dei in a Week 0 matchup, but Bishop Gorman looked more dominant in every phase during Friday night’s 56-28 win over Centennial.

Bishop Gorman now turns their attention to in-state rival Liberty, who they play next Thursday night, with kickoff scheduled for 7 pm at Fertitta Football Field. The two best teams in Nevada square off to kick off league play in what is most likely a preview of the 5A Division 1 title game matchup in November.

The final score between Corona Centennial and Bishop Gorman was the Gaels beating the Huskies, 56-28.

Beneath the Friday night lights, a clash between two FSM Prep Rally Top 5 teams took place in the northwest as #5 Arbor View took on #4 Shadow Ridge. The Aggies jumped out to an early lead and didn’t look back as they beat the Mustangs 45-28.

Coronado faced off against #2 Liberty in a game between two schools in the southwest of town. Coronado’s high-powered offense would be tested against a tough Patriots defense and one of the best two-way players in the city, Jayden Roberson. Liberty showed why they are considered the second-best team in the state as they thumped Coronado 49-7.

Moapa Valley clashed with Meadows, the defending 3A champions. The Mustangs wanted to show that their title last season was just a springboard to their jump to 3A. However, Moapa Valley beat Meadows 51-7 in a game that saw the Pirates dominate the Mustangs early and often.

Green Valley and #9 Faith Lutheran faced off in a game that, on paper, looked as if it would be a high-scoring affair. The Crusaders beat the Gators 30-14 to improve to 2-2 and 1-0 in league play.

Corona Centennial vs Bishop Gorman was a great game, but other teams played well too.
