Las Vegas can’t finish the comeback and fall to the Storm in game one.

 

 

The Storm shot the ball incredibly well on Friday night and backed Breanna Stewart’s 37 points to a Game 1 win by a score of 93-80. Stewart’s 37 points are the second-most points scored in a WNBA Finals game in WNBA history.  

For the Aces, it wasn’t the best performance from their star A’ja Wilson. She did score 19 points; however, she only had six rebounds and shot 6 for 20.

The Storm showed how powerful they could be when healthy and playing well as they shot 50% as a team from the field, and the Aces will have to make the necessary adjustments to get back in the series.

 

 

Breanna Stewart and the Storm were too much for the Aces to handle.

 

 

Breanna Stewart showed everyone how good she really is with her outstanding play in game 1. Stewart scored 37 points, one point shy of the record for most points scored in a Finals game in WNBA history but also had 15 rebounds and four blocks while taking over late in the game.   

Although Stewart did not set the record, her teammate Sue Bird set the record for most assists in a WNBA playoff game. The veteran had 16 assists and was dishing the ball out all night to different teammates. Jewell Loyd was one of those teammates as she scored 28 points. Seattle outscored Las Vegas by 31 points when Loyd was on the floor.

For the Aces, Angel McCoughtry led the team with 20 points and shooting 5 for six from beyond the arc. The Aces, one of the worst in the league in 3 point attempts and conversions, shot 47% from deep on 10 of 21 shooting in game 1. Jackie Young provided some spark off the bench for the Aces contributing with 12 points.

A huge 2nd quarter gave the Storm a big halftime lead. The Storm closed the 1st half on a 26 to 6 run outscoring the Aces 34 to 19 in the quarter. However, the Aces fought hard and got back in the game with a solid 3rd quarter, where they held the Storm to only 12 points. They trailed by 17 points headed into the 3rd, and eventually tied up the game. Vegas only trailed by two points going into the final quarter. In the 4th, Breanna Stewart took over. She scored the first 11 points of the quarter, giving the Storm some breathing room in which they held on to win game 1.

 

 

The Aces now face an important game 2 on Sunday

 

 

In the history of the WNBA, no team has ever come back from a 2-0 deficit in the playoffs, demonstrating just how vital Game 2 will be for Las Vegas.

A big key for the Aces will be preventing one of those dominating Storm runs. Seattle has been keen to go on massive scoring runs often, and if the Aces can prevent that, they will be in good shape, assuming A’ja Wilson bounces back with a dominating performance.

 

 

 

The Aces will look to even up the series against Breanna Stewart and the Storm on Sunday.
