WNBA Finals Preview: Aces vs Storm – Game 1

#1 Las Vegas Aces (18-4) | #2 Seattle Storm (18-4)

The two best teams in the league square off in the WNBA Finals.

The WNBA Finals will consist of the top two seeds from the regular season after the Aces defeated the Connecticut Sun in Game 5 on Tuesday. The Las Vegas Aces and the Seattle Storm are set to start a five-game series on Friday to determine who wins the championship.

2020 MVP A’ja Wilson will lead her team against 2018 MVP Breanna Stewart and the Seattle Storm coming off a three-game sweep of the Minnesota Lynx.

A battle between the last two MVP’s should bring forth a great series.

Breanna Stewart was not only the 2018 MVP; she was also the 2018 WNBA Finals MVP, so she is no stranger to playing on the big stage. She averaged 19 points and eight rebounds that led her to get MVP consideration. This was after she missed the entire 2017 season with an injury. The Storm will also have Sue Bird as she is also healthy for the playoffs. She missed 11 regular season games battling injuries.

For the Aces, A’ja Wilson won MVP deservedly so, as she was the backbone and leader of this Aces team. She put up 20 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks per game in her MVP campaign. Angel McCoughtry has also stepped up her game in these playoffs averaging 16 points as the Aces’ second-leading scorer.

Although Stewart and Bird are healthy for the Storm, they will be without Sami Whitcomb. She averaged 8 points off the bench for Seattle this season. As for the Aces, they will be without the Sixth Women of the Year winner Dearica Hamby who injured her knee in the semi-finals.

The bubble started with twelve teams, and now it’s down to the remaining two.

The Aces and Storm met twice during the regular season, with Las Vegas winning both games. In the first meeting, the Aces won 82-74; however, the Storm were without Sue Bird. The stars led the game as Breanna Stewart led all players with 29 points while A’ja Wilson had 23. The edge for Las Vegas came from the bench as they outscored Seattle’s bench 34-5.

In the second matchup, the final game of the season to determine who would get the number 1 seed, the Aces defeated Seattle 86-84. Yet again, the Storm were without Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart. This meeting was closer than the first time these teams met mainly because Jewell Loyd scored 30 points. However, it wasn’t enough to stop Wilson and Hamby, who had 23 points each.

The Seattle Storm have pretty much the same roster from their 2018 championship-winning team as they try to bring their 4th title back to The Emerald City. The Las Vegas Aces will oppose them as they look to win their first title since relocating to Las Vegas. The two best teams in the WNBA will battle it out in a five-game series. The year 2020 has been different for many reasons relating to sports, and as badly as the players would have wanted to play these games in front of their fans, winning a championship will still be a feeling none of these players will ever forget.
