FSM Essential Recap: Aces vs Sun – Game 1 – 9/20/2020

Rough start to the playoffs for the Aces as they fall to the Connecticut Sun in game 1.

 

The Las Vegas Aces were outplayed in all facets of the game against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday. The Aces last lead of the day came with four and a half minutes left in the 1^st quarter, and the Sun extended the lead all the way up to 29 points at one point, winning the game 87-62.

 

The Aces cannot keep up with Jasmine Thomas and the Sun.

 

It was a rough offensive start for the Aces, with only a 10 point 1^st quarter and no points in the last 4 minutes and 31 seconds. They finished with 25 points in the half, with the MVP A’ja Wilson leading the way with 10 points. The Aces shot 25% from the field in the opening half compared to Connecticut’s 42%.

Jasmine Thomas led the way for the Sun with 8 of the 14 points in the first quarter. She kept it going in the second quarter as she was nearly unstoppable in the 1^st half scoring 22 on 9-12 shooting. Thomas had more than half of Connecticut’s 1^st half points and only three less than the entire Las Vegas team, and 14 of their last 16 points to close out the first half. The same could not be said about DeWanna Bonner, as she struggled early on for the Sun, only having 2 points on 0-8 shooting in the first half.

 

The second half began the same way the first half did as the Sun extended the lead to 20 after starting the half with a 15-8 run. The Aces defense disappeared in the 3^rd quarter as they allowed 28 points, including nine more points to Jasmine Thomas, who finished with 31, a new playoff career-high.

Las Vegas did not have it going from deep on Sunday, shooting 1 of 14 from 3 while Connecticut shot 8-19 from deep. The Sun shot 50 percent from the field as they had everything falling for them. One of the only bright spots for Las Vegas was the WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson doing her thing, scoring 19 points to go along with nine rebounds. Jackie Young also provided 17 points off the bench for the Aces; however, it was not enough for them to stop the Sun.

 

The Aces can use this as a wake up call and bounce back for game 2

 

 

The good news for the Aces is that it’s a five-game series, and they can prepare and get back to playing their type of basketball. They are going to have to get more scoring and use their depth to their advantage. Besides Wilson’s 19 points and the 17 points from Jackie Young, the next highest scorer had 6.

The Connecticut Sun will look to take a 2-0 series lead and continue their Cinderella story throughout these WNBA playoffs, while the Aces look to even up the series at one apiece.

 

The WNBA has postponed the other semi-finals game one between the Minnesota Lynx and Seattle Storm after receiving inconclusive COVID-19 test results. The new date for the game is currently to be determined.

 

The Aces will look to bounce back in game 2 on Tuesday. You can watch that game at 6pm on ESPN2
