WNBA Playoff Preview: Aces vs Sun – Western Conference Finals – Game 5 – 9/29/2020

#1 Las Vegas Aces (18-4) | #7 Connecticut Sun (10-12)

WNBA semi finals comes down to one game…

After the Aces took game four by a score of 84-75, this back and forth series between the Las Vegas Aces and Connecticut Sun is headed to a decisive game 5.

The Aces have scored more than 80 points in both of their wins this series and less than 70 points in both of their losses. The shooting for Las Vegas has to be on point for the Aces to move on to the finals.

The Sun lost game 5 of the WNBA Finals in 2019 and do not want to lose another game 5 to have their season end before getting another shot at the championship.

Angel McCoughtry played a big part in getting the Aces to one win away from the WNBA Finals

A’ja Wilson has been the leading scorer for the Aces most of the regular-season and in every game so far this postseason. She did have a solid stat line with 18 points and 13 rebounds as she definitely made her presence felt. However, it was another player for the Aces that took over game 4.

Angel McCoughtry had 29 points to go along with six assists and five rebounds. She also contributed on the defensive side of the ball as well, having three steals. She was all over the court on Sunday, and it is so essential for the Aces to have multiple players, not just A’ja Wilson, have big games in the postseason.

Angel McCoughtry talked after the game about her team’s performance,

“You just get in that zone, you know, once we just took the pressure off ourselves, you just play free, and when you play free, amazing things happen.”

Head Coach Bill Laimbeer spoke about Angel McCoughtry’s play as well,

“Angel wasn’t ready to go home; it was fun to watch Angel play that third quarter. Yea, it was a spectacular performance to get us a lead we maintained the lead the rest of the way.”

The winner plays the Seattle Storm in game 1 of the WNBA Finals on Friday.

The Aces will go into game 5 with the feeling that the Sun just had their chance to move on, and now it’s their turn. Head Coach Bill Laimbeer talked about how difficult it will be, but he has faith in his team.

“Next game is going to be completely different. They’re going to make some adjustments. We’re going to make some adjustments. So it could be another player or two stepping up, but hopefully, the most important thing is we take care of the basketball, and we limit their offensive rebounds, so that’s the two big keys we believe.”

The Seattle Storm await the winner of game five tonight as the WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson tries to lead her team to the WNBA Finals for the first time since moving the franchise to Las Vegas. It will be no easy challenge, as DeWanna Bonner tries to lead the seven seed Connecticut Sun to the Finals for the second straight year.
