Bishop Gorman: 2020 Las Vegas High School Football Preview
Bishop Gorman’s historic ten year Nevada state supremacy in football ended in overtime last season to powerhouse Liberty High School.
Before that, nobody could have predicted that the long time chasers to the throne Gorman had sat on for a decade, would take down the Gaels and go on to win the state title 51-7 against Centennial High School. It marked the first time in ten years that two public schools made it to the state title game. One month after Gorman’s defeat, head coach Kenny Sanchez, who won 4 state titles and two national titles in five years as Gorman’s leading man, resigned after in-house differences came to a boiling point in the offseason.
His replacement is 40-year-old Brent Browner, who was the defensive backs coach of the 2017 state championship team, and last year’s team. Before that, Coach Browner enjoyed a career at Northern Iowa, graduated and played Arena Football, then went on to join Bishop Gorman’s coaching staff in 2006, under head coach Dave White. After White was let go in favor of coach Bob Altshuler, Browner became an assistant coach at Faith Lutheran. Then he went down to Austin, Texas, to continue playing and coaching before returning to Las Vegas.
His time away has paid off. Now armed with master’s degrees in Athletic Administration and Football Coaching, Brent Browner has found himself at the head of one of the most prolific programs in the nation. Even though the Gorman job is a blessing from the almighty himself, overflowing with talent like Zion Branch, Jayden Otte, Kodi DeCambra, Cyres Moss, and many, many more, Coach Browner’s work will not be easy.
After last season where Bishop Gorman lost two out of three out-of-state games and eventually lost to an in-state school, which hasn’t happened in ten years, Gorman is now in a position they have not been in for some time – the back seat. With Liberty’s victory over Gorman and the state title game, the Patriots are now the top dogs in Nevada. And with the creation of the new 5A division in football, Gorman will now have to play the best of the state every week. These teams now believe that they can slay the beast.
I’m not saying Gorman will take more losses because they migrate to the 5A, but I am saying that teams will now be more inspired to play hard against them after seeing them beaten. Unlike before, when the very shine off the Gaels‘ helmets had teams defeated before the first kickoff. And with the 5A sporting teams like Arbor view, Liberty, Centennial, and Desert Pines winning state will be more of a challenge.
However, Coach Browner and his staff have more than enough talent on the field and experience on the sideline, to make another run for not only the state title but a national title. The acquisition of the impressive and talented young QB Micah Alejado will do well to establish Gorman’s seat at the top.
For now, all we can do is speculate. The current situation with COVID-19 has put a damper on football activities in the valley. In the last two weeks, the NIAA and CCSD both gave the go-ahead for fall sports to begin their summer practices. It isn’t a guarantee, but an impression that a 2020 football season will happen. And when it does, all eyes still won’t be on the defending state champion Liberty Patriots The eyes will be on the Gaels of Bishop Gorman High School again. They now have a chip on their shoulder and a message to send to their doubters and fans alike:
Last year was a fluke, and they are still the top team in the state.
