The Las Vegas Lights FC drop a close one in the late minutes to LA Galaxy II.

 

In the first half, LA Galaxy II challenged the Lights FC to beat them through the middle of the pitch, and the Lights did that exact thing in return to take themselves up 2-1 in the first half.

The Lights made some excellent runs into or around the box against an overzealous backline from LA Galaxy. The Lights executed well on spreading out their formation wide, not playing the keep away offense, and making many key passes to move downfield multiple times.

Las Vegas stayed on the heavy ball pressure throughout the first half, not allowing Los Angeles to complete a good percentage of their passes. The Lights’ back four did an excellent job of anticipating their opponent’s passes and came up with crucial interceptions to halt Galaxy’s attack at goal.

The Lights FC were able to get on the scoreboard first in the 22nd minute when newly acquired Quincy Amarikwa dished a perfect through pass for Seth Moses for an open shot in the middle of the box. Vegas fans witnessed what may have been the best counter-attack from the Lights we’ve seen all season when they went coast to coast in less than a minute. Quincy Amarikwa picked up his second assist of the night off a first touch leading Yamikani Chester for a bottom right banger from outside the box.

Los Dos caught Las Vegas on their back heels in the 36th minute when Omar Ontiveros drove downfield single-handedly to put in a cross to the back post for an easy tap in for striker Augustine Williams.

 

Much like the last match between these two, LA Galaxy II picked up their play in the second half. 

 

The Los Dos squad picked up their pace with precise ball handling, passes, and pressure when the Lights had possession. 

 

The save of the match came in the 59th minute on an attempt from the Galaxy from eight yards out. A shot from Jonathan Perez was heading to the far left post, only to be deflected away by Edward Delgado to keep LA from tying things up.

The save of the match could only help for so long. Not too long after, Jonathan Perez received a long cross-field pass and was able to beat out Vegas defender Jaiden Waggoner for a goal past Delgado.  Augustine Williams showed up again for Los Angeles when he put a penalty into the back of the net in the 84th minute. The Galaxy scored three straight, unanswered goals to put themselves up by one at this point.

Galaxy II moves up to second place in the group B table to surpass San Diego Loyal with 21 points, leaving the Las Vegas Lights FC still with nine points at the bottom of the table.

Las Vegas has four games left to finish the season out. They would need LA, San Diego, and Orange County, respectively, to end with no more than 21 points to even have a chance. So you know what that means…

 

Yes, playoff hopes are still alive.
