No.1 seed Fresno State sends No.8 seed Nevada back home with a 75-71 victory over the Wolf Pack.
Fresno State is officially 14-5 all-time in the Mountain West Women’s Basketball Tournament. Their .737 winning percentage is the second-best in Mountain West Women’s Basketball history. The key players on the court for the Bulldogs were freshman sisters Haley and Hanna Cavender. The two sisters were assassins on the floor scoring a total of 42 points and a combined eight assists.
Haley Cavender won the Mountain West Freshman of the Year Award this season. The Bulldogs’ starters did a terrific job in scoring and dominated the Wolf Pack ladies outscoring them 46-28 in points-in-the-paint. Nevada’s sophomore guard, De’ja Hamilton, led the way with 13 points and sophomore forward Imani Lacy finished with 12 points.
San Jose State beats UNLV 67-48 in the Quarterfinals in the Mountain West Championship.
This is the Spartans’ second time in school history making the Semifinals of Mountain West Woman’s Basketball. They will play against No.1 seed Fresno State after defeating UNLV 67-48. UNLV fell behind early in this game and could never catch up. The Lady Rebels are now 12-21 all-time in the Mountain West Championship. San Jose St. advances to 4-6 all-time in the Mountain West Tournament.
For UNLV, star player senior Forward Rodjanae Wade led the Lady Rebels with 26 points and 21 rebounds. She’ll remember this game for years to come. Her 21 rebounds marked as a Mountain West Women’s Basketball Championship record, and the first 20-20 game in MW Women’s Basketball history.
“I feel like we have a lot of different weapons on our team, I feel like at certain times I get frustrated with myself because of things that I feel like I can do better, but it’s never within the team,” said Wade. “I know that we will come together and make things work. It sucks that we didn’t come out with a win, but it feels good that I was able to contribute and play for this team for four years.” Wade said after her final game as a Lady Rebel.”
SJSU scored 29 points off of UNLV’s turnovers, which was a crucial factor in getting this win. This was San Jose State’s third win over UNLV this season. Their key player, junior guard Megan Anderson, had a good game with a total of 12 points and 4-8 from 3-point range. Ayzhiana Basallo, who recently received the Newcomer of the Year Award in the Mountain West, racked up 18 points. The Spartans meet the Bulldogs back at the Thomas N’ Mack tonight at 6 p.m.
No.2 Seed Boise State cap a 73-50 victory against No.7 Seed Air Force
Boise St. are in the Mountain West Tournament for the fourth time in a row and will square off in the Semifinals. The Broncos have the highest winning percentage in the Mountain West this year. The Air Force Falcons played four games in the last eight days, while the Broncos sealed the first-round bye only played a total of 2 games in the past week. The Broncos were prepared for the Falcons, ending their visit to Las Vegas and sending them back to the academy after the Quarterfinals.
Boise St. has played extremely well on the court in recent weeks, winning 13 of their last 14 games. The Broncos prevailed with the help of forward senior A’Shanti Coleman, who hit double-figure scoring with a total of 23 points and five rebounds. Senior guard Jayde Christopher scored 12 points and 10 assists to help aid the win. Air Force collapses 4-21 in the Mountain West Conference.
“But, also, I go back to they’ve played a lot of basketball in the last week, and we haven’t. I don’t know if the bye at the end of the year is good or bad,” stated head coach Presnell. “I’m a pessimist, so I thought it was horrible. But when we got to play a team that had played four games in eight days, I think it was really helpful.”
No.3 Seed Wyoming triumph’s over No.11 Utah State with a score of 64-59 and advances to the next round.
Wyoming finished with a strong comeback, behind by 16 points late in the 2nd half. The Cowgirls were not leaving without a fight and will advance to the semifinals for the third year in a row facing off against Boise St. Wyoming had a well-balanced game with sophomore Forward Tereza Vitulova scoring 19 points and a stunning 15 in the second half with perfect shooting.
The three show stoppers were Taylor Rusk, Quinn Weidemann, and Vitulova, who scored 53 points combined. They were determined to get their team win and intend to bring the same energy against Boise State. Utah State’s Hailey Bassett showed some great play of her own with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting.
The Semifinals will take place at the Thomas N’ Mack Center later tonight, beginning at 6 p.m
All games except the Championship will be broadcasted on the Mountain West Network. The Championship will take place Wednesday night on CBS Sports Network.
