UNLV Has a 3-Sport Athlete in Isaac Lindsey

UNLV Men’s Basketball doesn’t have any shortage of skill and shooting up and down its 2020-21 roster. On paper, if you look at Isaac Lindsey, it might appear to the layman that was the sole reason he was offered a scholarship by TJ Otzelberger.
The combo guard from Mineral Point in Wisconsin does have quite the reputation as a sniper on the basketball court, but what some may not realize is that Lindsey was a three-sport star in high school. Basketball is the sport he loves most, but baseball and football were also realms where the Runnin’ Rebel freshman flourished.
Not only did Lindsey start all four seasons at quarterback for his hometown Pointers, but he also started every single season at shortstop. His accolades for both sports are lengthy and impressive.
In football, he was a three-time First-Team All-Southwest Wisconsin Activities League (SWAL) selection. Twice he was SWAL Offensive Player of the Year. On top of that, he was a two-time Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-Region player performer. Not to mention, he was a finalist for the WisSports.net Dave Kreig award, which is given every year to the top senior quarterback in the state.
Lindsey’s career stats at quarterback are gaudy as well. Over four years, he threw for 7,467 total yards and ranks 7th all-time in state history in that category. He also ranks 5th all-time in touchdown passes with 85. All in all, Lindsey accumulated almost 9,500 total yards in his illustrious career.
On the baseball diamond, Lindsey was just as impressive.
At the coveted shortstop position, he was a three-time all-SWAL selection entering his senior season. He also was a three-time Dodgeville Chronicle All-Area team performer. He was chosen Academic All-State by the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association to round out his honors.
Lindsey was a big-time winner with a bat in his hands. He helped the Pointers qualify for the WIAA State Tournament two seasons in a row–the first time the school had been there since 1974. He also hit a tremendous .533 as a junior as Mineral Point was the runner-up in the Division 4 state tournament.
That doesn’t even include his basketball accomplishments. Although his senior season was lost to a torn labrum and surgery to file down a large bone in his hip, Lindsey still totaled 1,420 points, 272 assists, and 137 steals for his career. In his last full season (His junior year), he averaged 20.5 points, 4.3 assists, and 4.4 rebounds per game. That year he shot 48% from the floor and 35% from three-point range.
When you look at the totality of Lindsey’s high school sports career, it’s no wonder TJ Otzelberger was so interested in having him play at UNLV.
Yes, he was a coveted basketball player, but more than that, he is an unquestioned leader and a high-level athlete. Having a player on your roster who can get into a huddle and run an offense at a high level is invaluable. Having a guard who has the hand-eye coordination to hit over .500 and play the most difficult defensive position in baseball at an all-state level is incredible.
Having a player who is that multitalented in your program, who is playing basketball because he loves it and is passionate about it more than anything is enormous for your culture.
Isaac Lindsey may have to wait his turn to get on the court due to a whole lot of talent being ahead of him, but when he does, Rebel fans can be sure they’re getting far more than just a shooter.
