In a short time, UNLV head football coach Marcus Arroyo has made the Rebels a destination for recruits.

Arroyo and his UNLV football staff have done a great job adding top talent in California, Texas, Hawaii, and Louisana. The 2020 UNLV recruiting class was second in the Mountain West Conference according to 24/7 Sports. Still, that class didn’t include two TCU transfers, quarterback Justin Rogers and defensive end Adam Plant Jr., additions who would’ve delivered the best class in the conference. Both players are expected to make an immediate impact when they get on the field for UNLV.

With the Fertitta Football Complex and Allegiant Stadium armed and ready to go in 2020 for UNLV, the Rebels could become a Mountain West Conference recruiting powerhouse. That should make Arroyo’s team deeper and more talented than any team in UNLV history.

On Monday night UNLV added a rising recruit in quarterback Cameron Friel, the top quarterback in Hawaii in the 2021 class.

Friel is a 6’4, 205-pound quarterback who has the frame to get bigger. With 10″+ hands and a size 15 foot, he not only passes the eye test, but Friel has the athleticism to pull and keep the ball in an RPO (Run, Pass, Option) offense and score. He runs between a 4.6 and 4.7 forty yard dash and was a dual-sport athlete (he played baseball as a pitcher and centerfielder).

His story is also one that Franchise Sports Media will be talking more about very soon when Ashly Dickinson releases her exclusive interview with Cameron. He is the 7th of 10 children, who at one time all lived in a three-bedroom apartment with only one bathroom. He told me that “I didn’t mind it because it made us closer and appreciate the things we have.”

The 3-star quarterback out of Kailua High School in Kailua, Hawaii, has a big arm and does a great job anticipating his throws. Friel has a natural flick when throwing the ball but is still raw mechanically. A coach told me, “He is athletic as hell with a huge upside” and that “The last few island quarterbacks have been pretty good.”

I had another coach tell me that Friel “has the same type of frame, skill-set, and ability as (former Oregon Ducks quarterback) Justin Herbert, so it’s no surprise that Arroyo really likes him.”

Friel told me about just how excited Marcus Arroyo was when he committed on Monday morning. “I got on the Zoom video with coach Arroyo, who also had UNLV offensive Coordinator Glenn Thomas in his office.  Once I told him I was committing to UNLV, coach Arroyo took one of the helmets behind his desk, put it on, and started giving coach Thomas high-fives and started screaming and yelling. He was so pumped and it got me even more excited to become a Rebel.”

UNLV also landed a key member to their 2021 class with St. John Bosco defensive back Kam Blanton.

Blanton is a six-foot, 185-pound defensive back that can play boundary or slot corner and safety. He was recruited by the past staff at UNLV but feels a unique vibe with coach Arroyo and cornerback coach Tre Watson. Blanton told me that it seems like he and Watson speak daily. “Coach Watson is the one that is recruiting me, and we hit it off quickly. I can’t wait to get up to Las Vegas and play for UNLV; we have something special about to happen.” Blanton told me on Tuesday.

When you put on the tape with Blanton, you see why coaches like him. He is physical, has great closing and recovery speed, and is a long, athletic playmaker. He also has gone up against the best competition in practice and his league. He doesn’t back down from a challenge and is eager to help make UNLV a contender.

Blanton also said that he is ready to make UNLV fans happy “I was up there for the Boise St. game last year, and I fell in love with UNLV. The fans want a winner so bad, and I want to be there to give it to them.”

Ashly Dickinson and JaRon Turner will also have an exclusive interview and scouting analysis on Blanton later this week on Franchise Sports Media.
