UNLV vs San Diego State

Runnin’ Rebels (11-10, 6-2) | San Diego State Aztecs (20-0, 9-0)

The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels (11-10) and the undefeated San Diego St. Aztecs (20-0) will be squaring off on January 26, 2020, 1:00pm PT at The Thomas & Mack Center.

At the moment, there aren’t any Division I teams who remain undefeated this far into the season except for the No. 4 San Diego State Aztecs. Saturday, UNLV is looking to put a stop to this hot streak that San Diego St. has been able to maintain so far.

The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels are coming off an 86-72 road loss to the Nevada Wolf Pack. They are a team who in their previous two games before playing the Wolf Pack, were averaging 98.5 points. However, they did not shoot the ball well against Nevada. The Rebels shot just 23 of 64 attempts from the field, going 7- 25 from the arc.

Although it came in the shape of a loss, Bryce Hamilton had another high scoring performance, tallying 26 points and grabbing seven rebounds in his outing against the Wolf Pack. Backing him up on the offensive end was Amauri Hardy, scoring 23 points. Unfortunately, their performances alone weren’t enough to get it done.

With San Diego State being the only undefeated Division I team, it should be all the motivation UNLV needs to bounce back and put an end to the Aztecs’ perfect season.

The Aztecs’ defense has been a massive contribution in terms of the success they’ve had this season. This year, San Diego State is allowing only 57.2 points per game, which is the third-best in the nation at the moment. The defense they’ve been playing has resulted in their opponents shooting just 36.9 percent from the floor. A significant leader for the Aztecs on the offensive end has been guard Malachi Flynn, who leads the team in scoring at 16.6 points per game, and 5.1 assists to go along with it.

This matchup serves as a redemption game for the Runnin’ Rebels; if they manage to come out on top, it will be a huge boost for their momentum. It won’t be easy. There will be a lot of tension heading into this game. UNLV is looking to get back on the right track after their recent loss, not to mention doing it in front of their home crowd. San Diego State is looking to keep the momentum of a spotless season going. In the end, despite the differences in overall record, these are the top two teams in the Mountain West Conference. Both sides have something to prove.

If the Rebels come out and play the kind of basketball they’ve played when at their best this season, maybe tomorrow this time, there will be no undefeated teams in the NCAA.
