UNLV (11-13) vs. Wyoming (12-10)

 

The Runnin’ Rebels finish off the regular season with a matchup against the Wyoming Cowboys.

 

UNLV coming off a loss to the Mountain West-leading San Diego State Aztecs, 71-62, will look to bounce back and take care of the Wyoming Cowboys, who come in with a record of 12-10. UNLV has a record of 11-13. UNLV, which has won three of its last five games, is coming off a three-game homestand where it split with Fresno State and the aforementioned loss to No. 19 San Diego State.

Wyoming also lost last time out when they played at Utah State and lost by a score of 72-59. These two teams rank 7th and 8th in the Mountain West Conference standings as UNLV is above Wyoming by one game due to each team’s conference record. 

 

 

 

UNLV will need to get scoring from multiple players to get the victory. 

 

A story for UNLV all season has been the inconsistency of the scoring throughout the team. Too many games have been played where the Runnin’ Rebels get quality scoring from one or two players, but not the rest of the team or the bench, resulting in losses for them.

UNLV got an impressive game out of David Jenkins Jr. in the loss to San Diego State as he finished with 32 of the Runnin’ Rebels 62 points. It was a career game for Jenkins as he has moved back into a starting position and has definitely earned it with a performance like that. He is averaging 15 points this season, second on the team. He is behind Bryce Hamilton who averages 18 points but is coming off a game against the Aztecs in which he struggled. He will be looking to bounce back, and UNLV will need him to. UNLV will have a consistent offense all game long behind Hamilton and Jenkins and hope the rest of the team can follow and generate offense behind them.

Wyoming is led by a few young freshmen who have had impressive seasons. Their leading scorer is Marcus Williams who averages 15 points for the Cowboys. Junior Hunter Maldonado averages 12 points a game and leads the team in rebounds, assists, and steals per game. A freshman on the Wyoming roster has scored 61% of the teams scoring this season, led by Marcus Williams. The Cowboys score their postings shooting the three-ball. They lead all Mountain West teams with 9 made three-pointers a game this season.

Both leading scorers for each team, Bryce Hamilton for UNLV and Marcus Williams for Wyoming, struggled in their last appearances, and both will look to get back to their game and lead their team to victory.

 

The Runnin’ Rebels are 0-11 this season when allowing their opponents to score more than 71 points.

 

When UNLV plays teams at the top of the Mountain West, they tend to have trouble stopping them from scoring. It then leads to defeats. Wyoming is 12-3 when they surpass 70 points in a game. UNLV will pressure this young Wyoming team who relies heavily on freshmen as the Runnin’ Rebels look to finish the regular season with a win.

 

The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels travel to Wyoming to play the Wyoming Cowboys tonight at 8:00 on CBSSN. Saturday’s television announcers will be Michael Grady and Julianne Viani-Braen.
