With speculation of a potential super fight between Gervonta “Tank” Davis (28-0, 26 KOs) and Ryan Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) swirling late in 2022, fans were less than pleased when the news broke that Davis first fight in 2023 would be a different opponent with the name Garcia, Hector Luis Garcia (16-1, 10 KOs).

It’s not Garcia’s fault that the biggest fight of his career just happened to get in the way of one of the biggest super fights in boxing. As a fighter, Hector Garcia is no scrub and had his moments in the fight that threatened to blow up any chance of a super fight between Davis and Ryan Garcia. But with plenty on the line, “Tank” withstood the storm and showed why he is one of the biggest names fighting today.

Through the first three rounds, Garcia controlled the pace. Using his longer reach to keep Davis at bay, Garcia found opportunities and landed shots, including a left counter that forced a reaction out of his opponent. Garcia started the fight by delivering blows and staying more active than Davis.

By the fourth round, “Tank” began to get active. Davis delivered combos and traded blows in the pocket as both fighters started to find their timing. Through the next three rounds, both fighters delivered punishment and traded shots to both the head and body.

In the eighth round, Garcia began to gain momentum. Landing with his jab and finding shots with the uppercut, the fight seemed to be turning in Hector’s favor until a fight in the crowd broke out and halted the action. While waiting for the altercation to settle, Davis had the opportunity to recover from the onslaught at the beginning of the round and retaliated by landing multiple clean combos and pushing Garcia backward.

Just before the end of the round, “Tank” was able to land a left shot to the head and seemed to injure Garcia. As the two men returned to their corners, Garcia seemed distraught and struggling to recover from that final shot. As the ninth round began, Garcia stayed on his stool as his corner announced he would not continue, giving Davis the victory via eight-round corner retirement.

Through eight rounds, the judges scored the contest 78-74, 79-73, and 79-73, all in favor of Davis. “Tank” outstruck Garcia, landing 99 of his 239 shots, while Garcia landed 55 of 345 shots. Though it took him time to analyze his opponent at the beginning of the fight, Davis displayed his durability and overall power on his way toward his 28th victory. Despite remaining undefeated and laying the groundwork to set up a fight with Ryan Garcia later this April, Davis’s court issues may still derail the bout. Davis was recently arrested due to a domestic violence charge in December and is scheduled to appear in court in February for a hit-and-run charge in 2020.

With one of the biggest fights in boxing on the line, let’s hope both “Tank” Davis and Ryan Garcia can make it to April and give boxing a super fight that it sees very few of.
