Raiders in The Community: Reading with The Raiders

www.FranchiseSportsMedia.com

In celebration of Nevada Reading Week 2020, the Las Vegas Raiders continued their growing partnership with the Clark County School District. On Tuesday, March 3, the Las Vegas Raiders found another avenue to be able to reach out to our community.

Raiders alumni Jay Schroeder and Napoleon McCallum visited two local elementary schools to read books to 1st and 3rd-grade students. Children from Elaine Wynn and Doris Reed Elementary Schools eagerly welcomed the Las Vegas Raiders to their classroom for storytelling time with Schroeder, McCallum, the Raiderettes, and the team’s mascot, Rusher.

The school district partnership with the Raiders began before the team’s official arrival to Las Vegas. Dating back to the 2018-2019 school year, the Raiders provided $35,000 worth of essential goods to fill resource rooms for schools in Henderson. Resources such as clothing, school supplies, and other necessities for the students and families were donated.

The Raiders have held football programs for 3rd-grade students and volunteered to hand out lunches to 1st and 2nd-grade students in the valley, demonstrating how they are becoming pillars in the Las Vegas community that they will officially call home starting this fall.

Schroeder, who won a Super Bowl with the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXII and later played five seasons with the Raiders, was delighted to give back to his community.

Schroeder called the Raiders move to the city ‘a great impact on the community.’ “I think it’s vastly important; people don’t understand the Raiders are coming to town, and they think it’s just eight games out of the year with football games. It’s much more than that,” Schroeder continued “They have families, they’re gonna be involved in communities, they’re gonna be involved in everything. It’s a blessing to have them.”

McCallum, whose NFL career was split into two stints due to his service in the U.S Navy, spent his entire six seasons playing for the Raiders. Tuesday, he spoke to 3rd-grade students about the importance of setting goals and maintaining good grades to accomplish their desires.

The children were ‘reppin’ Raider eye black stickers while they sat in anticipation listening to McCallum read ‘How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight.’ The children were entertained interacting with McCallum and Jen the Raiderette.

Cheri Ward, the Executive Director at Communities in Schools of Southern Nevada, said she intends to bring more Raiders’ events to the schools. “We started partnering about a year and a half ago, maybe longer than that when we went to a new school in Henderson. We found it very valuable; it gets the kids excited about coming to school or about reading, whatever it is. So it’s a wonderful partnership, and it’s really good for the schools and the kids, and it’s good for the Raiders to be out and about in the community, and people in the community really see how much they care.”

The children were full of energy, while Schroeder allowed a few of the kids to try on his Super Bowl XXII championship ring. The former NFL playersRaiderettes and Rusher, gave the children each a Raiders pencil pouch as a souvenir for the reading event.

The kids interacted with Rusher, questioning him on whether or not he is human. They were curious and driven to take off his helmet to see who was hiding behind the mask. Rusher entertained the children while becoming the highlight of the event. He passed off high fives to each kid, making them feel individually special.

This is the second year in a row the Raiders have participated in Nevada Reading Week. They are excited to explore the Las Vegas valley while donating time to their community.
