Since their latest 1-0 loss to Orange County, the Lights have taken their play on the field to the next level. Get excited Las Vegas fans, because this is a newly energized club who are playing top-notch soccer. You can feel the energy and intensity this squad is currently playing with. They compete with that underdog mentality, chip on their shoulder, and here to let the rest of the league know not to count this team out.

The Lights FC came into this game off a great win against Tacoma Defiance, and last-minute comeback tie against Phoenix Rising FC.

When asked about what has been the difference in this club’s turn around the past couple of weeks, forward Blake Frischknecht said, “We feel like we deserved results in those few games… We’re happy to be going the right direction, to get a win, to get a big draw against Phoenix, and a big three points tonight where we’ve got the momentum; we’re going to keep going.”

Frischknecht scored the winning goal on an assist from Rashawn Dally in the 84th minute to put his squad up 2-1.

Vegas native Blake Frischknecht told me what it means to play for his hometown team “It’s a dream come true. I am so glad I was able to come home and be apart of the team. And hopefully, we can keep these wins going.”

Oh how the tables have turned…

It looked as if the roles were switched from when these two clubs faced each other last match. Viewers may have been fooled to think the rematch was going to repeat itself when Orange County midfielder, Aodhan Quinn scored an early penalty kick in the 11th minute. Nonetheless, and a lot like the Lights’ last game against Phoenix, this did not halt their level of play.

Las Vegas played a drop-back defense for the majority of the game where the back six would retreat towards their own goal to avoid through balls and accurate crosses, while the front four of the attack would stay back to pressure the ball. Frank Yallop’s defensive scheme caused Orange County SC to struggle with passes and their overall pace to move the ball downfield. The Lights FC did a great job marking their opponent’s runs and initiating the pressure as soon as an Orange County player would receive a pass. This allowed Las Vegas to make more efficient tackles and interceptions, which then turned into nicely ran counter attacks.

Last night’s matchup was a game of crosses as 41 total were attempted from both teams.

Lights’ defender, Ramon Del Campo, was able to get a header for the club’s first goal, assisted by Junior Burgos on a corner kick cross into the box.

The Lights played a lot of show and go distribution throughout the game. Players would make cuts in the middle of the field, receive the pass, pass out to the next open teammate, make another run, and keep repeating to move their way downfield for goal opportunities. They would try and work their way in the middle of the field and push the ball out wide for the attack to make runs for a through ball or across.

Las Vegas midfielder, Junior Sandoval, put the game away with a low and hard shot past the keeper for the squad’s third goal.
