FSM Essential Recap: Lights FC vs LA Galaxy II – Game 9
The Las Vegas Lights FC shared points against the LA Galaxy II in a 1-1 draw at home.
The Lights faced off against the LA Galaxy II in their last game of a three-game homestand this Saturday. The Lights are used to being underdogs, but despite coming into the match as slight favorites, the team couldn’t get the best out of LA Galaxy II and settled for a 1-1 draw.
The Lights came out with yet another new lineup for this game. This lineup was unlike the others, with only one forward leading the lines in a 4-5-1 formation. Tomas Romero kept his spot in the lineup as the goalkeeper. Morton Bjorshol, Mohamed Traore, Dekel Keinan, and Antonio Leone also kept their spots as the starting backline since last week’s win against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
Alejandro Lara, Daniel Cristosomo, Alvaro Quezada, and Roberto Molina were the four midfielders that started against Pittsburgh. All kept their place in the lineup as Frank Daroma joined them as the fifth midfielder. For the first time this league season, Cal Jennings was left out of the lineup as Daniel Trejo was the only forward to start for the Lights.
This matchup was as fair as it gets and ended up being a great battle between them. In the first half, the LA Galaxy II took control of most of the possession. Both teams had their fair share of opportunities to score, but the Lights were the only ones who got onto the score sheet, with a beautiful goal from captain Cristosomo, as he scored from a long shot assisted by Daroma.
Trejo also had a clear opportunity. He received a long pass with a 1v1 against LA Galaxy goalkeeper Eric Lopez. Still, He was unfortunate as he shot the ball directly into Lopez’s hands, an opportunity that Trejo would’ve capitalized on nine times out of ten.
As the Lights entered the second half with the lead, there was no change to the formation. The Lights continued to trail in possession and tried to make an attacking substitution by bringing on Christian Torres in place of Daroma to secure another goal and extend their lead. Unfortunately, the Lights were caught attacking too much and suffered a Dante Campbell header goal in the 74th minute from a far-post cross by Cameron Dunbar.
The remainder of the game was a battle to secure the three points and a win in a fair matchup.
The Lights brought on Jorge Almaguer in place of Traore and Christopher Jaime in place of Molina. Bjorshol made a great run past the LA Galaxy II defense in the game’s dying moments and served a perfect cross into the six-yard box, which just missed the foot of Jaime and left the crowd gasping in disbelief as it seemed like the clear game-winning goal.
This game was a great exhibition of how good the L.A. linked teams are. The Lights, the USL Championship affiliate for LAFC, had their version of the USL El Trafico against LA Galaxy II in front of a packed Las Vegas crowd at Cashman and everyone in the city that saw this game live saw it live up to the hype.
The Lights continue to adapt against their opponents and try different methods as they approach the season’s midway mark. This game could’ve easily gone the way of the Lights, as the Trejo and Jaime opportunities could’ve been a goal on any other day and secured the three points for the Lights. This sees the Lights at the same position on the table in the Western Conference as they get ready to hit the road for the first time since their US Open Cup loss against Tucson FC.
This game will be against the Sacramento Republic FC on Saturday, April 30th, at 7 PM PT. Make sure to catch this game on ESPN+.
