Dodgers On Deck: Dodgers vs Angels
That’s five in a row baby! The Los Angeles Dodgers sweep the Angels in the Freeway series, after a dominant display of hitting. The “boys in blue” now hold the best record in the National League.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Los Angeles Angels Series #7
Game 1 Win 7-4
Clayton Kershaw (7 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO) was in top form on the mound in the first game of the series, pitching an absolute gem. The Dodgers’ ace only allowed one hit, a home run from 3B Anthony Rendon in the 5th, from a high-placed curveball. A tip of the cap to Kershaw for the fantastic pitching performance.
The Dodgers lineup was producing hits throughout the night. They consistently loaded the bases with batters having very productive innings, bringing runners home on two occasions on ground outs. Justin Turner started the train rolling as he singled in the first to put the Dodgers on the board.
Cody Bellinger is looking more and more like the MVP we all expect him to be as the season progresses. After a slow start, he seems to be catching up with the expectation, which can only make the Dodgers that much better. Bellinger hit a 2-run blast in the 6th, and another 2-run shot in the 8th, securing a win in game-1 of the Freeway series.
The Angels tried for a late-game rally, as 3B Tommy La Stella brought in 2 runs on a single in the 8th, and a double by OF Brian Goodwin in the 9th, making it 7-4. Kenley Jansen came in to put a stop to it and get the final strikeout to earn the save.
Game 2 – Win 6-5
Game two was the best game of the series, and it took ten innings for a team to come out as the victor. In the first inning, Mike Trout hit a 2-run shot to centerfield to let the Dodgers know this game was going to be a fight. The 2nd inning, the Dodgers would answer back after Max Muncy and Enrique Hernandez were walked by LHP Andrew Heaney. Mookie Betts made him pay with a single to bring in two runs to tie the game.
Max Muncy would earn himself 2 RBI’s with a single to put the Dodgers ahead in the 3rd, but the Angels would score a run as well in the 3rd, and two runs in the 5th to put them in the lead again 5-4. Mookie Betts came up loud with a home run in the 8th to tie the game, making this game an official volleyball matchup, and it would come down to who wanted it more.
At the top of 10th, Mr. RBI Max Muncy would hit a sacrifice fly, earning his 3rd RBI of the night after a stolen base from Chris Taylor placed him on 3rd. Kenley Jansen would be called upon once again and deliver two big strikeouts of Tommy La Stella and Mike Trout.
Game 3 – Win 8-3
Even though the Dodgers and the Angels both had ten hits in the game, the Dodgers were able to capitalize on the long ball and take an early strong lead. Max Muncy would hit a 2-run blast to help the Dodgers take the lead in the 3rd; from there, they just continued rolling.
In the 2nd inning, Edwin Rios hit a double off the centerfield wall but injured his hamstring on a slide into second base. He insisted on staying in the game, and it cost the Dodgers a run. Matt Beaty singled in the next at-bat but is thrown out on trying to stretch it into a double. Since Rios gingerly made his way around 3rd, Beaty was out at 2nd base before Rios reached home. Edwin Rios’s injury status is “day-to-day.”
In the top of the 3rd inning rookie catcher, Keibert Ruiz got his first Major League hit, a home run to tie the game at 1. In the 4th Mookie Betts would bring in a run on a single, and Corey Seager would hit a 2-run homer himself, making the game 7-1. Dustin May 4.1 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 SO) held up reasonably well against the Angels lineup besides giving up a home run to Anthony Rendon, but it was the Dodgers bullpen that came together to help slow down the opposing team.
OF Brian Goodwin would homer in the bottom of the 6th inning, but it would be the last run the Angels would acquire for the rest of the game. The Dodgers sweep the series, making it their 5th win in the row.
Seattle Mariners Series Preview
The Mariners (7-15) have been having a tough time as of late and will visit the very hot Dodgers for a three-game series. After coming off of a series sweep against the Houston Astros, Seattle scored only a combined total of 4 runs in three games, showing that the Mariners have struggled at the plate. With the power bats of the Dodgers, this could spell big trouble and cost Seattle another series.
