Dodgers On Deck: Dodgers vs Houston Astros Series #15
Los Angeles Dodgers (33-14) | Houston Astros (23-24)
The Dodgers were paid a visit by their favorite American League team, the Houston Astros. This series would have brought out the Blue to Chavez Ravine to “welcome” the Astros. They would’ve seen a lot of hits, good pitching, (with a good bit of up and in pitches) but nothing too bad. This could be another preview for the World Series and some possible redemption for the Dodgers.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Houston Astros Series #15
Game 1 – Loss 7-5
The way the Dodgers vs Astros game started, it gave you the feeling the Dodgers would have a decisive win in this first game of the series, but the Astros would not go down without a fight. The rivalry between these two teams would see over twenty combined hits in the first game.
The hitting was one of the bright spots for the team early in the game. The Dodgers would combine for ten hits and thirteen strikeouts with only one walk in the game. The recently blazing hot Chris Taylor (4 AB, 1 R, 2 H, 2 RBI’s, 1 SO) hit another home run in the bottom of the second that scored Will Smith (4 AB, 1 R, 2 H, 0 RBI’s, 0 SO) and gave them a 2-1 lead.
Enrique Hernandez (3 AB, 1 R, 1 H, 1 RBI’s, 1 SO) jacked a solo shot in that same inning to make it 3-1. Joc Pederson would later pinch-hit for him. The team would add a total of two more runs in the third and fifth innings with a sac fly from A.J. Pollock that scored Corey Seager in the third and Corey Seager in the fifth with a single that brought in Mookie Betts and made the game look just about over at 5-1 in the Dodgers favor.
This would be the last of the scoring for the Dodgers.
In the eighth inning, the Astros would score on a force out and bring the Dodgers lead to only three runs now. The ninth inning would be the complete unraveling of the game for the Dodgers with a double by Josh Reddick scoring two runs, followed by a Max Muncy error that scored the run that would tie the game. The Astros scored two more and left it to the Dodgers to try their luck at last licks, but that didn’t work out, and the Dodgers would take the loss and only hope to now split this series.
Game 2 – Win 8-1
The Dodgers dominated the Astros in game two and split the series by winning this game. A.J. Pollock (4 AB, 2 R, 3 H, 3 RBI’s, 1 SO) started the game by hitting his tenth home run of the season. The game would stay relatively quiet until Enrique Hernandez’s single that scored Cody Bellinger and Chris Taylor and gave the Dodgers a decisive 3-0 lead. The team would combine for twelve hits, scoring eight runs on eight strikeouts, which was a very productive outing for the group with all but one starting batter getting at least one hit.
LA’s pitching (9.0, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 R 10 SO’s 1 HR) was just as impressive as the hitting. With Dave Roberts calling on eight pitchers and only one pitcher going more than an inning. This new building rivalry between these two teams saw a lot of pitchers throwing up and in, thankfully, with no one getting hit or suspended. This back and forth is far from over between these teams.
A team with this much power and contact ability, with a stable of pitchers that when they are hot, are one of the best in baseball, is poised to be the top team in the national league for years. The only fear is will they be able to keep it up come the playoffs?
San Diego Padres Series Preview
The Dodgers series against the new-look San Diego Padres is one you won’t want to miss. With the Padres’ new look and the new nickname “Slam Diego,” they have been one of the hottest young teams in baseball this year. Led by one of the National League Most Valuable Player favorites in shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., the Dodgers will need to be careful pitching to the entire lineup, but especially one of the most electric kids in baseball.
This will be one of the more significant tests for the Dodgers as both teams are relatively healthy and playing well.
Scheduled to pitch in game 1 Monday, 9/14
Dodgers: Clayton Kershaw (5-1) / Padres: RHP Dinelson Lamet (2-1)
Schedule to pitch in game 2 Tuesday, 9/15
Dodgers: Tony Gonsolin (0-1) / Padres: RHP Zack Davies (7-2)
Schedule to pitch in game 3 Wednesday, 9/16
Dodgers: Dustin May (1-1) / Padres: TBD
