Recap: Dodgers vs Brewers – NLWCS – Game 1
The Dodgers hosted the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Wild Card Series. This is a new format for the postseason with a number one seed being in the wild card series. It seems odd but it is 2020. This series will have three of the last four MVP’s competing to make it to the divisional round in the NL Bubble at the new Rangers stadium in Texas, Mookie Betts and the Dodgers will looked to come out hot and fast to start the series.
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Milwaukee Brewers – Wild Card Series #1
Game 1 – Win 4-2
The Dodgers started the first game of the National League Wild Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. This was the end of a postseason record eight-game day. It felt more like college basketball in March, but it was fantastic to have a full slate of baseball all day.
Dave Roberts gave Walker Buehler the nod for Game 1. Buehler has struggled recently with blisters on his fingers that make the curveball more challenging to throw. Buehler had problems with his location on his curveball in the first inning but still recorded two strikeouts. He dotted the fastball very well and looked like he may be big trouble for the Brewers lineup as easy as he got through the first.
The Brewers found themselves in a real hard spot in the first when Mookie Betts led off the Dodgers half of the inning with a bang off the wall while cruising into second. Then the Dodgers loaded the bases up on Milwaukee, which had every single reliever in the Brewers bullpen stretching immediately.
The first two runs for Los Angeles came from two bases-loaded walks, probably the most effortless runs they will score all postseason. Mookie Betts carried the offense tonight with his two doubles and, as always, his stellar defense. Betts is showing again why he is the MVP front runner in the National League. He has continually hit for average and power throughout his career, but this year he has become the face of baseball. He’s done it in one of the largest sports markets in the country, in a time when sports have come second in society to global health and social injustice.
Orlando Arcia took Walker Buehler yard off a fastball that he was crossed up on with his catcher. Buehler shook to his catcher to acknowledge the mistake also. Roberts went to the pen after the four innings and eight strikeouts from his starter and brought out another sure arm in Julio Urias. Urias would record the win with his three innings pitched and five strikeouts. The game stayed stagnant for a few innings for both teams, with the only big highlight being a Max Muncy kicked ball that could have been much worse.
Corey Seager had the only home run in the game. It was a 447ft solo blast to dead center in the seventh inning off Brewers’ right-hander Freddie Peralta. This home run for Seager was his fourth of his postseason career. It also gave the Dodgers a 4-2 lead. They held this lead until they could bring in the closer Kenley Jansen for the ninth. He recorded his first save of this postseason and looked solid as he got through the inning quickly.
Dodgers vs Brewers Game 2 Series Preview
The Dodgers host the Brewers on Thursday once again, this time in Game 2 of the National League Wild Card Series. Los Angeles looks to repeat what they did in Game 1, hitting three doubles, homering, six walks, and a pitching staff recording fifteen strikeouts. They want to have another all-around sound game of baseball in a league that emphasizes the long ball. LA has proven in previous postseasons that the jack cannot be counted on to win championships. Betts will need to continue his dominance throughout this series and the postseason to bring another World Series back to Los Angeles for the first time since 1988.
Scheduled to pitch in game 2 Thursday, 10/1
Dodgers: LHP Clayton Kershaw (0-0) / Brewers: RHP Brandon Woodruff (0-0)
