Dodgers On Deck: Dodgers vs Rockies
The Dodgers tried to keep the best record in baseball and the streak of consecutive series wins alive against the Colorado Rockies. No team is hotter right now, with a MVP candidate as well as the best young all-around lineup in baseball. Good luck everyone else. With the playoffs around the corner, the only question is have we even seen the best from them yet?
Los Angeles Dodgers vs Colorado Rockies Series #13
Game 1 – Win 10-6
Dodgers, Dustin May (5.2, 3 H, 2 ER 5 SO’s) would have a decent outing allowing two runs through five and two-thirds innings. It would take four pitchers three and one-third innings to get the last ten outs. Ferguson and Graterol would each allow two runs, and Kenley Jansen didn’t get a save but did record the final three outs.
The highlight of the Dodger game was the hitting, and the late-inning hitting more than anything. In the first inning, each team hit a solo shot, one by Raimel Tapia and then the counter at the bottom of the inning by Max Muncy to make it a one to one game. The scoring seemed to settle down until the fifth inning when the Rockies’ Hilliard homered off Dustin May.
Corey Seager would start off the bottom of the sixth with a single to left to score Mookie Betts and tie the game back up. The teams’ resiliency of the team would show as the barrage of hits would start from the seventh on. Will Smith hit his fifth home run of the year and scored Chris Taylor, and Corey Seager flyed out and scored Lux to make it a three-run lead.
Kevin Pillar hit a grand slam to left field to remind Dodgers fans that no lead is safe. The jack gave the Rockies a one-run lead entering the bottom of the eighth. The fireworks would start at the bottom of the inning when Bellinger lead it off with a single. An AJ Pollock homer followed that hit, with jacks from Joc Pederson and a Mookie Betts that would also score Gavin Lux and make it a 10-6 Dodger lead. Kenley Jansen would come in to get the last three outs and start another series off in the right step towards October.
Game 2 – Loss 2-5
The Dodgers were unable to secure the victory with a sub-par outing from the bats and an inability by Blake Treinen to keep the game close by allowing three hits in a high leverage moment. The game started slow but in favor of the Rockies, with a sac fly to score a run in the second. After a solo homer by Charlie Blackmon in the fourth, things weren’t looking good for the Dodgers.
The bats of Mookie Betts and Corey Seager would come alive in the bottom of the fifth, with Betts singling to left to score Gavin Lux and Seager doubling to center to score Betts. This would now make it a tie game. The ninth would be the undoing of it all with Treinen putting a few guys on base and allowing a run for the Rockies to regain the lead. He would be replaced by Alex Wood, who would allow a few more runs and now push the team into a three-run deficit going into the bottom of the ninth.
At the bottom of the ninth, with last licks still left for the Dodgers, all hope was on the team to overcome this three-run deficit. Joc Pederson would start by striking out, followed by a single from A.J.Pollock, then a strikeout from Gavin Lux. Finally, a flyout by Edwin Rios ended the game. The team would have one more game to keep the streak of consecutive series wins alive.
Game 3 – Loss 6-7
The Dodgers had another back and forth game with the Rockies in this one. The scoring started early with Corey Seager hitting a blast to center to put them on the board. The Rockies’ Josh Fuentes would homer and score Matt Kemp to take the lead. Will Smith would answer back with a solo run in the bottom of the second to tie it back up.
Scoring would stay quiet until the fifth when the Rockies scored two more runs on singles by Arenado and Tapia. At the bottom of the fifth, Corey Seager would keep the back and forth vibe of the game alive with his second bomb of the game to score Kike Hernandez and retie the game. Hampsons triple in the sixth to score Pillar gave the Rockies the lead, but as this game and series showed, leads don’t last.
The Dodgers’ Chris Taylor hit his third home run of the season, also scoring AJ Pollock for a one-run advantage again. With a game similar to table tennis, the Rockies scored again on a Matt Kemp two-run homer that scored Pillar and let them regain the lead. Corey Seager (4 AB, 2 Hits, 3 RBI’s, 1 BB, 1 SO) had a great game but ended up getting the final out of the game after two home runs on two hits.
The Dodgers would need seven pitchers to record the twenty-seven out’s, and the starter Julio Urias (4.1, 5 H, 4 ER 6 SO’s) could have had a better outing, but the bullpen was not great either with six pieces will not help the next few games.
Arizona Diamondbacks Series Preview
The Diamondbacks, off a losing series with the San Francisco Giants, are looking to take some games back from the Dodgers and spoil their run at the best record in baseball this year. The last time around, the Diamondbacks got beat up by the Dodgers and are gonna want some redemption. The Dodgers are poised to take another series, but we will see. With the Dodgers dropping the first series to break their consecutive streak, moving onto the Diamondbacks is a chance to start a new one. Pitching will be the most critical aspect of wins moving forward as the bats have been swinging well.
