New FSM Essential Recap: UFC 283

UFC 283 from Brazil was an exciting and fun filled card to start the year off on the right foot for the UFC.

The main event saw a new champion crowned as Jamahal Hill ( 12-1 7KOs ) defeated Glover Teixeira ( 33-9 ) via unanimous decision.

While the bout had moments of back-and-forth action, Hill dominated big chunks of each round to have a scorecard of 50-44. Several times throughout the bout, Hill’s power seemed to be to much for Glover to withstand. Head kicks, straight rights, and left hooks almost certainly ended the night early, but credit to the veteran Glover, who withstood every attack and was able to fight his way back.

In the second round, after the fight went to the ground. Glover looked to take the back of his younger opponent but Hill quickly realized he needed to move out of position and scramble back to his feet where he had a clear advantage in the striking power department. Coming from Dana White’s Contender Series, Hill is the first winner from the show to wear UFC gold.

The new champion is now 6-1-1 in the UFC and on a four-fight win streak. Standing six feet four inches and 31 years old, Hill seems he might be on the verge of being a future star with the promotion. Of course, he’ll have to defend the title a few times along the way but his overall power, ever-improving skillset, youth, and size make him a tough outing for anyone looking to take his seat at the top of the 205lbs mountain.

As for Glover,  the 43-year-old has seen and done it all inside the cage. While he clearly still has fight left in him, it’s possible this was the last time we saw the Brazilian step into the Octagon as he laid his gloves on the mat before leaving the cage. Usually, a sign that a fighter is retiring. If that’s the case, we were fortunate to see one of the true warrior spirits step into the cage for years to show us that heart, determination, and hard work does pay off.

The co-main event saw for the fourth time, Brandon Moreno ( 21-6 ) face off against Deiveson Figueiredo ( 21-3 ) for the 125lbs title.

The fight went about as we’d come to expect from these two gladiators. Moreno was aggressive, coming forward, landing heavy shots, looking to push the pace and keep the action moving. Figueiredo was showing his power with counterstrikes and going for takedowns and submissions once they engaged in grappling. Another classic battle seemed to be in order until an unfortunate hit to the eye of Figueiredo caused for a doctor’s stoppage. The Brazilian eye had swollen shut and couldn’t be allowed to continue to fight. Unintentional by Moreno, it is one of those moments in MMA where we just can’t have nice things all the time.

This was an unfortunate way to end such an amazing rivalry but both fighters do have to move on with their careers and try new challenges. Figueiredo is moving up to 135 lbs to try his hand in a new weight division to see if he can find the same level of success he found at 125 lbs. This leaves Moreno as now the top dog at 125lbs and all eyes will be gunning for him and his title he has worked so hard to get and keep.

Also on the card, we saw Gilbert Burns (21-5 9SUBs ) defeat Neil Magny ( 27-10 ) via first-round submission. The Brazilian then called out for title challenger Colby Covington for a bout in the welterweight division. If that match-up is made, it will surely be a barn burner.

We also saw the end of one great career in Maurício “Shogun” Rua. Shogun ( 27-14 21KOs ) didn’t get the win but his career was truly one of the best and he leaves this sport an absolute legend. Speaking of legends, Brazilian legend and one of the all-time best champions in MMA will be immortalized as Jose Aldo will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. A warrior whose reign was unlike any other we saw in the sport, Aldo will take his place among the elites and be forever known as a Hall of Famer.

Another excellent fight card is in the books as the UFC continues to entertain fantastic showings one after the other. Whether we are watching champions, former champions, title contenders, or up-and-comers, the UFC will continue to give us entertaining events to enjoy.
