Entering his third division within the promotion, former Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar shows that regardless of the weight class, he’s a force to be reckoned with.

 

In a five-round battle, Edgar (24-8) was able to show that he isn’t to be written off yet as he won via split decision (48-47, 46-49, 48-48) over Pedro Munhoz (18-4).

 

From start to finish, the two warriors kept the action at full speed. Constant pressure from Munhoz, who was looking to enforce his aggressive style on Edgar, who went to his natural counter stick and move style.

We knew Edgar could go the distance without question, but Munhoz being in his first main event, showed that he too could go a full 25 minutes with his high pace fighting style.

Munhoz would look to see if he could slow down Edgar with a barrage of leg kicks. Paired with a stiff jab and a blasting right hand, Edgar indeed showed the effects of his opponent’s strikes and power as he had a visible limp halfway through the fight. But being the warrior that he is, the former champion toughed it out, still circling away, not allowing Munhoz to plant his position to fire off bombs, moving in and out with his trademark one-two in and out.

 

Two of the divisions best showed they will be among the top contenders for the near future.

 

At 38 years old, making his lowest fight weight debut of his career, Edgar said he felt good with the cut and that going the distance wasn’t a problem at all. Of course, having such a tough opponent in your debut isn’t so much fun, but he wanted to show that if he’s to be in a new division, he wanted folks to know that he belonged.

Neither fighter would have long spurts of inflicter will, on the other, a constant back and forth between the two kept you on edge wondering if one well-placed shot would be the beginning of the end. Both would get a flash knockdown but couldn’t capitalize on it as, given the ground game of Munhoz and the resilience of Edgar, neither fighter wanted to put themselves in harm’s way and allow the other to catch them being over-anxious.

While Munhoz clearly had the power, Edgar put his punches in bunches as both fighters showed the effects of the other offensive attack. In the end, it was the new guy at 135lbs who hand would be raised in victory thus, aligning himself after defeating a top 5 guy to now be on the shortlist of title challengers for the champion Petr Yan.

Despite the loss, Munhoz is in no bad position to fall too far down the rankings and clearly has shown through his career his a force to be reckoned with. So look for him to bounce back in another high profile fight, maybe not a headliner but still a notable opponent highly placed on the card.

Edgar held the title at 155lbs, came up short in capturing a belt at 145lbs, if he can work his way to a title shot at 135lbs, he’ll be only the second fighter ( Kenny Florian being the other) to challenge for a title in three different weight classes.

 

In the co-main event, a Light Heavyweight showdown took place although it was a different matchup then what was scheduled.

 

Originally, Ovince Saint Preux was slated to fight Alonzo Menifield in a 205 clash, but OSP was pulled from the card due to a positive COVID-19 test. Now he did test negative earlier in the week, so the bout is being booked for a later date. Stepping in would be Mike Rodríguez vs. Marcin Prachino. 

 

Rodriguez would improve to 11-4 as he earned his 9th KOof his career with a first-round finish of Prachino, who fell to 13-5. Utilizing knees from the clinch, Rodriguez switched it up and landed a stiff left elbow as his opponent was expecting another knee and didn’t see the elbow coming. Out almost instantly, Rodriguez showed that he could be ready for a step up in competition as he among the rest of the Light Heavyweights are looking to move up the ladder now that the throne is vacated of his champion.
