Match Preview: UFC Fight Night – Waterson vs Hill – 9/12/2020

Another weekend among us, which means another night of fights is in order as the UFC returns with a UFC Fight Night on ESPN+.

This time out, we will see the ladies take center stage in a women’s strawweight thrown down between 8th ranked Michelle Waterson (17-8 9 SUBs), and 13th ranked Angela Hill (12-8 5 KOs).

A fan favorite, The Karate Hottie Waterson, will be looking to step back in the winners’ circle as she has come up short her last two outings in the octagon. Known for her excellent standup game, Waterson has more wins via submission because opponents assume going to the ground will be more in their favor. However, they soon learn that she has put in the work in the grappling department and can end the night with a tap out.

Across the cage will be Overkill Hill, who is also looking to see her hand raised as she came up just short in her last outing. Hill is an exciting fighter to watch as she applies constant movement, and a mix of combinations to keep her opens off guard. Hill is seeing a step up in competition in her last few fights as she is 3-1 in her previous four and looking to show she belongs amongst the top names within the division. A victory over Waterson will certainly jump her ahead in line and set her up for another big matchup in the future.

Both warriors are looking for a win, of course, but this is the first time the UFC will hold an event featuring a black female in the main event. These two were initially set to do battle a few cards back, but an undisclosed reason from Waterson forced the matchup to be pushed back. With the original main event between Thiago Santos vs Glover Teixeira being moved due to Teixeira testing positive for COVID-19, this historic moment came to be.

This should be a fun action-packed fight as both ladies prefer to stand and exchange strikes, with Waterson being the more accurate technical thrower while Hill is more active and puts together punches in bunches. While looking to strike, Waterson may not want to shy away from taking this match to the ground where she clearly holds the advantage over Hill. If she chooses to stand and trade, look for Waterson to keep the distance and pick Hill apart with precision strikes, perfectly timed attacks, and control of the center of the cage.

For Hill, she’s going to want to make this a backyard fight by mixing in and out movement. She will possibly look to set the tone early with leg kicks to limit Waterson’s movement and kicking strikes by chopping at her wheels early and often. In her last outing, Hill looked like she was going to gain a win but in the last round she seemed to lose gas and couldn’t keep the pressure up. As her first main event, she better have worked on her conditioning to go 25 minutes if she plans on earning the biggest win of her career.

Both ladies need a win to solidify their place in the women’s strawweight division and are evenly matched to give us a fun night of fights. Get your popcorn ready, because this is going to be a show.
