Las Vegas Lights FC are in a tight race to make the USL Championship Playoffs. The club that is currently ahead of them in the race, El Paso Locomotive FC, is the same club that Lights FC played against Saturday night. The result of the match was not what the Las Vegas crowd was hoping to see, as El Paso won the match in dominant fashion, 3-0. After a scoreless first half, Sebastián Velásquez got Locomotive FC on the board in the 52nd minute on a penalty kick. Both teams then traded off opportunities to score without any luck for the thirty minutes. It wasn’t until the 81st minute when Josué Gómez scored the first of his two goals for the match. He scored again for good measure late in the 90th minute.

The talk throughout the match was that the referees were a bit aggressive on calling penalties against Las Vegas. Midfielder Junior Sandoval even received a red card in the 85th minute after receiving his second yellow card and was ejected.

Lights FC manager Eric Wynalda was very upset with the match, referees, and his team. He walked off the field before the match even ended.

The only success of the night for Las Vegas came at halftime when they did the huge Helicopter Cash Drop 2.0. After last year’s success, Lights FC owner Brett Lashbrook decided to bring back the event where a helicopter drops money on the field for the fans. This time around the helicopter dropped $5,000 in cash and $5,000 in “Plaza bucks”, courtesy of the Plaza Hotel & Casino.

As for Lights FC, they have to quickly regroup for their next match Wednesday night against Phoenix Rising FC. That match will not be an easy task as Phoenix is currently sitting atop as the best team in the Western Conference.
