New Match Preview: Las Vegas Lights FC vs LA Galaxy II – 8/30/20
https://franchisesportsmedia.com
The Las Vegas Lights FC look to continue their success on the field as they go up against Los Angeles Galaxy II.
The Lights FC are coming off a great homestand where they were able to get two wins and took a last-minute win away from Phoenix Rising FC to finish the game out in a tie.
The Las Vegas club has turned things around since their last defeat to Orange County SC back in match week 8. The team has improved with their passing, ability to create better-shot opportunities, and their counter-attack defense in transition. Fans can see that the Las Vegas club looks revitalized when playing on home turf, but let’s hope they can carry this level of play on the road as well.
This will be the first time the Las Vegas Lights FC will take on LA Galaxy II in the 2020 USL Championship season.
This match is a much-needed win for both clubs as LA Galaxy tries to take over second place in the table while the Lights try to stay in playoff contention. Las Vegas is no longer trailing a substantial amount of points behind the rest. Although the Lights are still ranked at the bottom of the table, they seem to be heating up at the right time.
Besides Phoenix Rising FC, the rest of the group stage are within two or three games apart. So as of right now, second place is up for anyone to take. It will not be much longer until Phoenix is being contested for the number one spot as well.
What to expect in today’s matchup:
Much like the Lights, the LA Galaxy look to send in a lot of crosses into the box, as they had attempted 14 last week against the Portland Timbers 2, and 24 against Orange County the week before. With that being said, the Lights revealed in their latest 3-1 victory over Orange County, that if you try to have a crossing competition against them, you are going to pay.
When a team attempts many crosses in a game, it allows the opportunity to exploit their counter defense. Sending in a cross relies on more players to make a run into or around the box. The more attackers that push up into the box means less reinforcement on the rest of the field.
The backline of defense needs to work that much harder and have little room for failure during a counter-attack because the rest of the squad are either recovering to their position or not able to catch up to the ball since their momentum was going towards the goal on their own attack.
This attacking scheme goes both ways. You may be thinking to yourself, “Why not just be conservative with the number of players attempting to receive the cross?” Well, it just makes it that much easier for the defense to mark fewer guys which then allows for double teams and so on.
Players on the look out:
In today’s game, viewers could be in for a battle between the strikers.
LA Galaxy II forward, Augustine Williams, who sits at 6’2″ could be a physical threat to Las Vegas’s defense. In seven matches, Williams has recorded five goals.
Las Vegas forward, Rashawn Dally, who also comes in at 6’2″, attacks with aggressiveness and physicality. Dally has produced two goals and two assists in six appearances. Los Angeles’ back four tend to be overzealous with their field positioning, so a striker like Dally who prefers to make through runs should be able to cause a lot of problems for Junior Gonzales and his squad.
