New Match Preview: Lights FC vs LA Galaxy II – 9/15/20

The Las Vegas Lights FC try to get back to success as their playoff chances are diminishing. They continue their road trip to take on LA Galaxy II.

Both the Lights FC and Galaxy are coming off a loss. This match is a much-needed win for both as the LA Galaxy sits just one point behind the second-place playoff spot while Las Vegas is trying to recover from a ten-point deficit in the table. The Lights have only five games left in their season to turn things around.

Vegas has to be perfect from here on out. Not only is there no room for error, but they can only hope opponents such as Orange County SC and San Diego Loyal are dropping points along the way as well.

Battle of the crosses

Both the Lights FC and Galaxy II rely heavily on their outside-in attack. They look to move the ball out wide and send in a lot of crosses, hoping that a good portion of their attempts will find a teammate in the box. Both clubs have around a 20% crossing accuracy mark for the season. So as you can tell, it is a low efficient strategy, but defenses tend to give up passing outlets on the sidelines to avoid any good looks through the middle.

As a defense, you would instead take your chances allowing more crosses into the box versus to attacks through the middle of your backline.

When a team attempts a lot of crosses in a game, it allows the opportunity to exploit their counter defense. Sending in a cross relies on more players to make a run into or around the box. The more attackers that push up into the box, the less reinforcement you have on the rest of the field.

The backline of defense needs to work that much harder. They have little room for failure during a counter-attack because the rest of the squad are either recovering into position or not able to catch up to the ball since their momentum was going towards the goal on their own attack.

This attacking scheme goes both ways. You may be thinking to yourself, “Why not just be conservative with the number of players attempting to receive the cross?” Well, it just makes it that much easier for the defense to mark fewer guys, which then allows for double teams and so on.

Players on the look out:

Las Vegas striker Blake Frischknetcht who leads his team in both goals (3) and assists (3), can look to repeat his type of production from the last time his squad faced off against LA Galaxy. Frischknetcht scored a crucial goal late in the match to put his team within 1.

LA Galaxy II forward, Augustine Williams, who sits at 6’2″ could be a physical threat to Las Vegas’s defense. In eleven matches, Williams has recorded seven goals.

Las Vegas forward, Rashawn Dally, who also comes in at 6’2″, attacks with aggressiveness and physicality. Dally has produced two goals and two assists in ten appearances. Los Angeles’ back four tend to be overzealous with their field positioning, so a striker like Dally, who prefers to make through runs, should be able to cause a lot of problems for Junior Gonzales and his squad.
