Game Recap: Raiders vs. Buccaneers – Week 7

The Las Vegas Raiders fall to .500 on the season as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers come into Las Vegas and pick up the win.

 

Throughout the week, the Las Vegas Raiders dealt with COVID-19 related issues with their entire first-string offensive line, as well as star safety Johnathan Abram. Having to play an NFL schedule amidst a pandemic presents so many new problems and obstacles for teams.

COVID-19 precautions prohibit players who test positive and those who have come into contact with positive players to participate or even show up to their team’s events. Meaning that anyone who is believed to be in contact or at risk has to miss out on practice leading up to game day as well.

Weekly training before a game is crucial. Each week is different because each club prepares different schemes depending on their opponent. “Football is a game that needs to be practiced, it’s a game of a team, and when you don’t have all you’re guys out there, it’s tough throughout the week,” said Derek Carr on what it’s like battling the pandemic.

So, although Trent Brown was the only first-string linemen out, the rest of the offense was already at a disadvantage because they did not get game-like reps as a core.

 

The Silver and Black severely missed their hard hitting safety. Tom Brady had a lot of success with passes over the top of the defense.

 

Usually, based on the other games this season, the Raiders’ defense turns things up a notch come the second half. But the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense was too much to contain in yesterday’s matchup. Tampa Bay executed the type of game plan Las Vegas needed to, using every weapon in their artillery. Ranging from their half-back duo with Ronald Jones III and Leonard Fournette to wideout threats like Chris Godwin and Rob Gronkowski. 

Gronkowski has solidified himself as Tom Brady’s most reliable receiver, again. The duo surpassed Dan Marino and Mark Clayton with 80 touchdowns for the fourth-most all-time by a quarterback and receiver combo. However, Brady’s game-changer yesterday was Scottie Miller, who finished with 109 yards on six receptions and a touchdown.

The Buccaneers’ offense is really starting to come to fruition. Brady had nine different skill guys get involved in the passing game. Hence why the running game did not produce that much on the ground because yards through the air were getting it done.

Nonetheless, Jones III and Fournette are more than capable of putting together two hundred plus yard games rushing. Now, to add fuel to the fire, the Bucs just recently signed Antonio Brown, who is arguably still a top tier receiver in the NFL despite his complications in the past two seasons. Brown will attract so much attention from secondaries, which will only open the field up for playmakers like Chris Godwin and Mike Evans. 

 

Another crucial turnover in the 4th quarter by Derek Carr ultimately iced the Raider’s chances of competing for a win.

 

Check downs and power runs were not going to get it done yesterday against an elite front seven with Tampa Bay. The Raiders already anticipated heavy pressure in the backfield from players like Shaquil Barrett and Devin White, but they battled for most of the game.

It’s the timely stops and turnovers for a defense that can change the momentum of a game. After the interception by strong safety Antoine Winfield, Las Vegas never put another scoring drive together and allowed Tampa Bay to score fourteen unanswered. DC continues to put up good numbers on paper, but all it takes is for one key turnover to change the whole narrative.

 

Don’t panic Raider Nation, the Las Vegas Raiders return next week with a healthy, COVID-19 free roster. They take on the Cleveland Browns in a matchup for a wild card spot. Kickoff is at 10:00am PT, only on FOX.
