Game Balls: Raiders vs Jets

The Oakland Raiders’ get grounded and fall to the Jets in Gotham City on Sunday.

Raider Nation showed up ready to go in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Sunday, but they were the only ones wearing Silver and Black to do so. The Raiders came out flat and missed a golden opportunity to put themselves in a position to take the divsion lead with a win next week against the Kansas City Chiefs, but the New York Jets would have have none of that on Sunday. Jets quarterback Sam Darnold threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score, leading the Jets past the Raiders 34-3 for their first three-game winning streak in over two years.

“We got our butts kicked,” Raiders quarterback Derek Carr said. “There’s no other way around that. They got after us from start to finish. Hopefully, it’s an eye opener.”

“You ever been on a boat that’s sinking?” Raiders head coach Gruden asked the media after the game. “It’s not happy. It’s not pleasant. It’s adversity. It’s football. You’ve got to respond to adversity. We didn’t do a good enough job as coaches rallying our troops today.”

The Jets safety Jamal Adams wasn’t too happy with the amount of Raiders fans in the stands at MetLife Stadium. It pissed him off when the Jets were boo’d loudly during the pregame warm-ups. “I’m not going to lie to you, when we came on to the field, we felt disrespected,” Adams said. “We got booed in our own home stadium by the Oakland fans. We came back into this locker room and it was a hell of a talk.”

Carr played his worst game of the season before being pulled for Mike Glennon late in the third quarter. Carr finished 15 of 27 for 127 yards with the pick-6 to Jets defender Bryan Poole. Carr also fell to 2-9 in his career in games that started with the temperature below 50 degrees, and the tempature at kickoff on Sunday was 43 degrees.

Rookie running back Josh Jacobs, who entered the game fourth in the NFL in rushing, was held to 34 on 10 carries against the number 1 ranked run defense in the NFL. The Jets held the Raiders to a seson low 68 yards rushing in the game.

But the blame isn’t all on Carr, in-fact I will say a lot of it goes on Raiders defensive coordinator Paul Guenther. The Jets offense could do whatever they wanted against the Raiders defense converting third down after third down and constantly having open receivers on delayed crossing routes. There wasn’t a huge pass rush for Oakland, and when there was a flag  thrown that some would consider highly questionable.

The Jets then benefited from what appeared to be another shaky call late in the second quarter. Jets quarterback Darnold was sacked by Raiders rookie Maxx Crosby at the 9 yard line, but defensive tackle Maurice Hurst was called for roughing the passer. Officials ruled he dived on the pile late, but replay showed Hurst being pushed into it. Instead of a huge loss of yardage and the down, it put the ball at the Raiders 4. Darnold took it in for a touchdown on the next play.

“I don’t want to sound very arrogant or too cocky, but I think they came in a little too happy,” Adams said of Raiders fans. “I think they thought it was going to be an easy game.”

Now it is time to honor the players I thought balled out and give out the ” Raiders vs Jets Game Balls.”

Yeah right. There isn’t any Raiders player who will get a game ball this week. The way they played reminded me of years past when Raiders fans went into games hoping to compete, not win. The expectation is the playoffs for the Raiders and Coach Gruden expects more out of his team when they are playing teams that they should beat. On Sunday, the Raiders played arguably their worst game of the year and I will not reward them for it.
