FSM Essential Recap: Las Vegas High School Football- Week 4
Week 4 of the 702 High School Football season is in the books and it was another week filled with storylines, drama, and great action on the field. But there is only one place to start this week and that was at the Polynesian Classic.
There was a ton of scoring at Bishop Gorman Friday night in both Polynesian Classic games.

In the first game of the Polynesian Classic, Desert Pines took on Orem (Utah). The game started off with both teams scoring touchdowns, but Orem’s miscues cost them all night. Credit the opportunistic Jaguars defense for causing six turnovers, including recovering a pair of fumbles inside its own 10-yard line, one of those was in the end zone.
But Desert Pines, who hadn’t played since their Week 1 win over Palo Verde because of positive COVID-19 cases within the program as well as their opponents programs, seemed to have ran out of gas in the second half. Orem tried to mount a comeback, but failed. Orem cut the Jags lead to less than 10 points, but failed to recover an onside kick which all but sealed the 53-42 Desert Pines win.
“We made the plays when it counted to get us through,” Desert Pines head coach Tico Rodriguez said.
“If you knew how young we are on defense — freshmen and sophomores,” Rodriguez said. “They are huge up front and they just pounded us. … When you are young, everything is based off momentum and energy. Getting those breaks really carried us through.”
The #1 team in the country showed why as Mater Dei beat Liberty 49-7.

The Mater Dei Monarchs are the gold standard for high school football. Year after year they are ranked in the Top 5 of all high school football teams in the nation. The defending Nevada state champion Liberty Patriots will take on any team, any where, and at any time. The two teams faced off in the second game of the night at the Polynesian Classic.
The Monarchs and Patriots each punted on their first possessions to start the game, but after that it was all Mater Dei.
Even without one of the Top 5 players in the country, USC commit Domani Jackson, Mater Dei carved up the Liberty defense. On offense, the Patriots couldn’t get anything going against a smothering Monarchs defense, led by Malaki Te’o. Te’o, who is the younger cousin of Mantei Te’o, caused a fumble, created pressure and even returned a short kick for 12 yards.

UNLV commit, Liberty quarterback Jayden Maiava, displayed his athleticism, and rocket arm, but it wasn’t enough. Germani Bernard, Liberty’s all every wide receiver, was the focal point of the Monarch’s defense and was held in check for most of the night. At halftime Mater Dei led 42-7 and the running clock commenced.
While it wasn’t the best look for Liberty in front of a near sell out crowd (and on national TV), but Patriots head coach Rich Muraco and his staff will have the Patriots right for next week game when they take on Legacy.
The FSM Prep Rally #2 team, Bishop Gorman, will take on Lone Peak later tonight at 7pm at Bishop Gorman in the final game of the Polynesian Classic.
